4/20 - April 21st 2009, 02:55 AM

So, if you do not know what 4/20 is, it's basically the day to go and smoke weed. Here's the wiki on it :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_(cannabis_culture)

I don't want to make this a "Marijuana should be legal/illegal" or "People who do marijuana are stupid" or anything like that. So be respectful and all that.

But what do you think about this day? The reason I point it out is because the college near me is the college listed in Colorado on the Wiki page But our teacher in government was asking us what we think they should do to prevent it at the school. Or if it's worth trying to prevent it?

I think it's another excuse for people to smoke weed. No big deal.

If it makes you happy, more power to you. Also, I have a question:

Do people in other countries celebrate 4/20 or is that just the American way?

I've heard some people say they celebrate it in the UK? I don't know if they celebrate it because the US does or because everyone over there does though. If that makes sense?

Can't really be prevented. Weed is illegal, what more could they do? Just another excuse to go out and smoke until you're a drooling monkey. Nothing significant about it, in my opinion.

I don't think much about it.
The only people getting high today get high every other day anyway.

Wow, never heard of that before. I'm just gonna say other people can do what they want, but I'm not touching any sort of drug that's illegal, or many that are legal either. Just the way I am. And if someone does this, I say it's totally up to them, I'd just rather not hear about it.

We celebrate 4.20 pm.... stoner tea time

I don't see the point in trying to prevent a day, if people want to stop people smoking, go to the source. It's not terribly special, it's just another day with a nice excuse to get high.

It's pretty popular here too, but that's only because my american friends have been spreading it for a while.

I don't see why 4/20 should be prevented, it's not that different from any other day of getting high really, it's just 'special'

Re: 4/20 - April 21st 2009, 11:20 AM

Mmm, a few years ago, the seniors at my high school proclaimed this day "Senior Skip Day - 4/20." It's stuck around ever since, though now, basically only people who smoke pot or have the intention of doing so skip - which is maybe 20% - 30% of my senior class, so it's not like the whole grade is skipping or anything.

How can we prevent students from staying home from class to smoke pot?

First and foremost, we can't make pot such a taboo subject. Students need to be educated on the effects that pot has on you, short term and long term. If teachers (like, health educators, mainly) are going to skip over any part of that, they're not being fair. But if they are honest with students and have their research done, they're going to seem more believable, and thus people will listen to them more.

Re: 4/20 - April 21st 2009, 01:02 PM

Where I am it's celebrated. Especially on 420 our principal and vice principals make sure to check bushes, alleys and groups of people randomly sitting for weed. I know four major staff were out yesterday, though I don't think they caught anybody. I heard of a lot of people skipping just for the day.

There's no way to prevent it, I actually think that the school shouldn't bother going around for people on today. They have better things to do that beat around in the bushes looking for stoned kids.

4.20 has several important meanings behind it.

Pot day (as it's called by most people) is the first thing that comes to mind, and is the only thing that a lot of people will remember the date for. I personally have no problem with that.

However, it's also Hitler's date of birth, and the anniversary of the Columbine massacre. I find nothing to celebrate on a date like that.

I didn't know Hitler was born on 4/20. I don't think that there is anything that the school can do to prevent it though. It's just one of those things.

Ever since my freshman year of high school I was never a fan of 4/20. Personally I have no problem for marijuana and am even for legalizing it, but everyone always seems to forget that Columbine happened that day. I find that pretty significant, what I find even more significant in a bad way is that in high school whenever someone would talk at me on 4/20 about it being weed day and I would mention Columbine not one person knew it happened on the same day. Weed is more important than the deaths of innocent kids I guess.

That's a very good point. I hadn't thought of that, but it's true. That's pretty sad.

I agree, but I don't find it the fault of 4/20. Our school, literally didn't mention it at school because they "felt this would upset the students and disrupt the learning environment". Yeah. Our administration isn't all that bright. But I do know that EVERYONE at my school knows when it is. Many of us had friends and/or family affected by it, being in Colorado, even though it's a ways away from where I live.

But! Katrina, I also have to say, they educate us so much at our school it's almost like a joke like I can tell you just about any affect it could have on me, but I can't tell you why that's so entirely awful with most of the things. Which is really bad, but yeah...
