Cast walkout over 'horrific' scenes - April 21st 2009, 02:34 PM

http://www.stuff.co.nz/oddstuff/2347...orrific-scenes Some cast of a major new opera production have walked out, complaining that a gang rape and a machinegun battle on stage are too horrific. Twenty-eight of the 64 chorus members and three of the leading singers have stopped going to rehearsals of Samson and Delilah in Cologne. Director Tilman Knabe has set his production of Camille Saint-Saen's masterpiece in the modern-day Gaza Strip instead of biblical Palestine. The staging includes a bloody machinegun battle and a gang rape with buckets of fake blood. A spokeswoman said rehearsing these drastic scenes had been "psychologically unbearable" and had made many chorus members ill. "Apparently some people weren't accustomed to this sort of thing," said opera spokesman Johanes Wunderlich. "But other theatres are doing worse; in Duesseldorf where they are performing Macbeth they throw real faeces around on stage."

HAHAHAHA!! I'm sorry, but the feces really got me, WOW!

Good for them, I don't think we need to show these types of things. Humanity is becoming way too desensitized to violence. There is a line between showing it (like in a documentary) and putting it in an opera or a play. You do not mix entertainment with stuff like this that is really happening to people, I feel that it only glorifies it any the fact that someone is making money off of other people's suffering.

Oh please, it's acting with fake blood. It's people like this who, at the sight or mention of something "horrific" walk out claiming it's too "psychologically unbearable" that need to get used to a bit of violence. I'd have loved to see that scene, although, I doubt it will happen. My suggestion is that those actors and lead singers grow some skin and a backbone.

As for the real feces, that's a little bit odd, so I can understand that one a little bit more.

But, if they knew what the scenes entailed, as it wouldn't be something just conjured up out of the blue, then why did they even participate in the play? Why go with it, then when that scene happens, they begin whining and run off stage like a bunch of little school girls who saw a big hairy spider.

I think they really should have read up on that production before deciding to join the chorus, especially if they had weak stomachs. I'm just wondering how bad they could possibly make it with fake blood and acting! It's not like it would look all that real.

I'm thinking they should quit and give the director some time to find new people.

everybody is different and some things are disturbing to some and not to others. but what i would say to them is that they should have read up on the production before agreeing to it.auditioning new people who have to take time to learn the material and then getting them up to speed on things about where theyre supposed to be on stage and everything and rehearsing more because it was so many people who left is going to be a major setback for the whole production. if i was the director i would make them suck it up and deal with it.

I don't blame them to be honest. That sounds completely foul. Then again, they should have known the production would include it really so...

I don't think I would be able to act in a scene like that either. It sounds so gory. I don't watch TV with scenes like that, nor movies, and I would not want to see it in a play either.
