Good. Step in the right direction if you ask me. Hopefully people wont abuse it.

Wow, you couldn't get it before? America is even further behind the rest of the western world than I thought. Though I still think 17 and up is a bit old? Make it available for 15 and up.

But that's still great.

Good for them! Its about time people stopped telling us to quit having sex (as if thats gonna happen) and started dealing with it.

Re: FDA to allow morning-after pill over the counter for 17-year-olds - April 23rd 2009, 12:24 AM

I also think thats it really good that they are offering it at a younger age...but I have to say that I really hate the morning after pill! I know far too many people who use it as their metod of birth control...I almost think it takes away some of the consequences of having sex without being protected. For example, I have one friend who had sex with his girlfriend and they didn't even bother with a condom because they could jsut get the pill!...ridiculous!

I just hope that it is used responsibly and that birth control options are off to everyone at just the same ease.

....sorry for the rant

It needs to be available to girls at or above 15. It's just stupid and ridiculous that seventeen is the minimum age without consent or prescription. It's not supposed to be a primary source of birth control, but shit happens, even if you're not seventeen yet.

It's about time, I guess. Primary form of birth control? How is that not running up a bill??

17 year olds? It should be 13 or 14 in my opinion. Teens have sex and teens are also known to be impulsive and careless at times. I'd rather them be able to avoid pregnancy if they can. The morning after pill is less traumatic than an abortion, or at least that's what I'd think. Maybe give them pamphlets with birth control information with it or whatever, but the pill should definitely be available to younger teen girls.

This is good and bad. Now some teens might think that it's okay to have sex with no conception... Because they can always go to the store and get the pill. You can't tell me that this is probably what a lot of teens are going to do.

But It is good that they will probably have less unwanted pregnancies.

Just adding, I think It should still be prescribed by a doctor. Honestly, I think the sexually active should take some responsibility.

I'm glad this is being allowed and I think people younger should have it. However, they should not abuse it and use birth control.

Why would it being prescribed by a doctor make it more sexually responsible than getting it over the counter?

Doesn't the chance of Rape increase now that attackers know the pill is available over the counter?

Good move!! But do agree it should be lower.
As for the doctor thing ... surely getting it over the counter you have to pay for it. I know here you have to pay £20 if you buy it. Even a small amount like that is enough to put people off not 'protecting' beforehand.
I don't think it will increase rape. I don't think that a rapist would worry about getting a girl pregnant, if they're willing to do it in the first place ...

I mean to say that It's making everyone take responsibility after their actions and counting on the morning after pill to make sure they are not pregnant.

I support this idea fully, but do hope teenagers take some sort of responsibility before engaging in sexual intercourse.

I don't get your comment. I don't know maybe I don't understand the consent laws but I didn't think it was illegal for a minor to have sex if it was with another minor. I have absolutely NO problem with the law not allowing people over 18 to have sex with kids under 18 (mostly 15 and younger).

As for the story it is certainly good news. Now the schools need to start focusing on more sex ed concerning STD's so kids don't start losing their heads and having unprotected sex because they think pregnancy is the only risk.

Re: FDA to allow morning-after pill over the counter for 17-year-olds - April 23rd 2009, 10:46 PM

This seems good and bad. The good is rather obvious and pointed out already by others. The bad is that it seems to be encouraging younger people to have sex because they can now get this and solve some problems. If it is dropped to 13-14 years old, the same will happen, just to a larger effect, that and the effects it may have on 13-14 year olds may not be known. It may also increase the rates of rape and other sexual crimes, although I'm uncertain on this.

This isn't going to lower the increasing rate of sex among minors, it may increase it even more. Unless of course I missed something where they wanted to increase the rate, then this has bad implications: nice idea, bad consequences.

As long as you are being responsible, why does it matter if you're responsible before the act or after it? I'm not understanding what you're trying to say.
