Mexico City on alert over swine flu scare - April 25th 2009, 07:34 AM

I'm surprised nobody has posted this already. It's kinda scary!
http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/25/swine.flu/index.html

CNN) -- Mexican officials closed all schools Friday in the capital city in an effort to combat the swine flu virus that has killed dozens in Mexico and infected eight people in the United States.

Authorities also closed schools in Mexico in an effort to quell the virus, which has killed at least 68 people in the country, according to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.
Other public institutions, including museums and government offices, were also closed in Mexico City.

Mexican soldiers distributed surgical masks to pedestrians and motorists in downtown Mexico City on Friday, according to state-run media.
President Felipe Calderon canceled a scheduled trip to the northern state of Chihuahua and stayed in Mexico City to address concerns on the virus.
"We know the seriousness of the problem," Calderon said. " I know that we will be able to solve this. This is our obligation."

More than 1,000 people have fallen ill in Mexico City in a short period of time, U.S. health experts said.

Health officials said they are concerned that the swine flu virus matches samples of a virus that has killed people in Mexico.
"This situation has been developing quickly," said acting Centers for Disease Control Director Richard Besser. "This is something we are worried about."

New York health officials announced Friday they are testing about 75 students at a Queens school for swine flu after the students exhibited flu-like symptoms this week.
A team of state health department doctors and staff went to the St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens on Thursday after the students reported cough, fever, sore throat, aches and pains.
There have been no confirmed cases of swine flu there. The tests results are expected as early as Saturday.
Eight cases have been reported in the U.S. since Tuesday. Besser said all of the eight U.S. patients have recovered.
»
None of the U.S. patients had direct contact with pigs, though a patient who lives in San Diego had traveled to Mexico, the CDC said.
Besser said officials had not found common exposure or behavior among the eight U.S. patients.
"We have not seen any linkage at all between the cases in Texas and California," he said.
The new virus has genes from North American swine influenza, avian influenza, human influenza and a form of swine influenza normally found in Asia and Europe, said Nancy Cox, chief of the CDC's Influenza Division.

Swine flu is caused by a virus similar to a type of flu virus that infects people every year but is a strain typically found only in pigs -- or in people who have direct contact with pigs.
There have, however, been cases of person-to-person transmission of swine flu, the CDC said. Officials found evidence, for example, that a patient transmitted the disease to health care workers during a 1988 apparent swine flu infection among pigs in Wisconsin.
Experts think coughing, sneezing and contaminated surfaces spread the infection among people. From December 2005 to February of this year, 12 human cases of swine flu were documented.
The new strain of swine flu has resisted some antiviral drugs, officials said.
The human influenza vaccine's ability to protect against the new swine flu strain is unknown, and studies are ongoing, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC's interim deputy director for science and public health program. There is no danger of contracting the virus from eating pork products, she said.
Canada is also testing samples from Mexico "and has placed a travel alert for travel to Mexico," CDC spokesman David Daigle told CNN by e-mail.

The United States had not issued any travel alerts or advisories by late Friday, but some private companies issued their own warnings.
"Public health officials in Mexico began actively looking for cases of respiratory illness upon noticing that the seasonal peak of influenza extended into April, when cases usually decline in number," said an alert Friday by the International SOS, a medical and consulting

I just heard about this. It seems odd...like someone genetically altered a strain of flu. It's also scary.

I think it's insane that I haven't heard about this... especially since I really try to keep up to date with news. Apparently I haven't been doing a good job lately.

Here is some information I found about the swine flu.

I think everyone has to take into mind that now they know this is a poitental outbreak, people being panicky will go to the doctor a lot quicker and it is a very treatable disease- everyone in the US (to my knowledge) has recovered fully and only 1 person needed hospitalization.

The White House is giving a conference very soon and all the news stations have been interviewing various doctors.

They've all said the same thing: wash your hands, don't run to the doctor unless you're sure, flu shot will not protect you, and there are several ways to treat the flu if it's contracted. Also, that the biggest indicator is not just flu like symptoms, but those symptoms on a very intense scale.

I don't think the outbreaks will hit the same scale as what Mexico City is currently dealing with.

Agreed with Steph- with Mexico City you have one of, if not the most densely populated cities in the world with a poor infrastructure- it's a haven for disease. The US *should* be much better equipped.

A class from New Zealand landed back in Auckland from Mexico and then started getting sick with this. It may be silly but I have family in Auckland, and I'm totally worried.
Plus infection alerts on England and Scotland now as well.

There are infection 'possibilites'. Bare in mind a lot of people travel to mexico and may just have the regular flu. The best thing is to follow the government advice and just stay calm.

In the article it does mention that 68 people in Mexico have been killed by this so far. (And probably more by now) And while it may be treatable, which I don't know if it is or not? people are dying from it. And a lot of people even in America don't have the money to get proper health care if they do get this flu.

And there is no way people will actually keep calm.

Why do we have disease in the world? This is why I became an Athiest .. because I can't sit back and believe in something that's hell bent on destruction. If 'God' can't stop something like this, then I think I'd actually prefer to go to hell

There are so many things that I havn't gotten to do yet, and I don't want some stupid virus to take away everything thats important to me

No idea, but not many do- usually it's in the Elderly it hit's hardest.

I'm not sure about cost of treatment- generally in pandemics (if this turns into one) it's given out free though because you have to control it as best as possible. I've no idea really, as healthcare is all free in the UK.

The EU's already telling people not to travel to the US and Mexico and if the situation gets worse I wouldn't be too surprised if air travel to and from Mexico is grounded.

Two cases have been confirmed in Scotland ...
It is the elderly and babies that are usually most vunerable, but reports said that a lot of young adults are those who died, and they aren't supposed to be vunerable to flu.

You can't move mountains by whispering at them.

You have to remember that Mexico is poorer than most countries, so there are going to be young people dying aswell ... regardles of whether or not they are supposed to be vunerable.

Because of the bird flu scare, MEDC's are already stocked up on anti-viral drugs so the effects won't be as bad

Any comment on public hysteria is appropiate, however I hadn't realised exactly how widespread it has become... deleted.

In Scotland too... i'm just shocked on how this virus has spread and how fast, I remember that last Thursday we were all normal everyone walking on the streets normally and today there's no one on the streets, the schools are closed, even churches are closed, no parks, movies, malls..... it's getting really weird, i just hope it all end soon.

I also heard that one reason is because many victims in Mexico did not receive medical care sooner.

This flu can be prevented if people wash their hands frequently, etc. There is also medication to treat this, I believe.

How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday,
When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way,
How did Ghandi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all,
Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall,
It's to give; I guess I'll pass it on

yes, one of the reasons the people has died here in Mexico is because they did not received medical care during the first symptoms, also because it's a new virus.

I find the whole situation kind of funny. It isn't really a big deal. About 3000 people in Canada die a year from the regular flu, only about 100 have died in Mexico. I'd assume the deaths from Swine flu are people who already have weakened immune systems.
