Would you be offended? - April 25th 2009, 02:22 PM

So, if you even know me a little bit, you'll know I loves me some musical theatre
But anyway I don't normally mix t/h and theatre but I wanted to know what you guys thought about what's happened recently.
So in Wicked at the moment the leading lady (who is in my signature ) has crazy fans. Like proper crazy, they make the Jonas Brother and Twilight fangirls look relatively normal. People have moved to where she lives in London to be nearer to her. People follow her home. People go into shops and buy things from there because they've seen her with the bag.
So they all go EVERY week to get the front row tickets and scream their heads off through out the whole show, which for one thing is very bad theatre etiquette, and you can at times barely hear the performance.
So at a performance in this week just gone after a scene in act to there was a little mix up with the sound and her mic was left on whilst she was back stage, and it was broadcast to a full house audience (thats around 2000 people) "Throw those pins at the screaming girls in the front row" and she sounded very angry. She also didn't come out through stage door to sign like she normally does after a show, but that doesn't bother me its not in her job description to stand there for hours and sign things
Anyway all those fangirls at the front got very offended. I admit that it was quite rude, but they were being very loud and inconsiderate.
Do you guys think they were right to be offended? Also she is not apologising which I don't think she should have to, but I don't know its hard to call who's in the wrong.
Just wondering what people who aren't biased towards either side think

if i were them i would probably be quite offended, yes. they paid for a ticket to go and watch, and as far as i know theres no rule that you can't make noise if you want to. sure, it might annoy some people, and i wouldn't do it personally but i guess you can't stop them if you want to. it's the nature of her job that people will follow her round and she will have obsessive fans. if she doesn't want to be in the public eye and have to put up with these annoying girls then she's in the wrong profession.

it's not like she doesn't get paid enough. she should just put up with it. and yes, i think she probably should have apologised. it's quite rude to say something like that about your fans who have paid to come and see you, and therefore are technically paying your wages.

I guess I sort of agree with Elle.

It's really unfortunate that her mic was left on, and surely it comes back to the whole thing which is like "if you haven't got something nice to say then don't say anything" just because she was thinking that about the screaming girls in the front row (:/) she shouldn't have said it. Even if her mic wasn't left on the people who could hear her backstage could have changed their opinion on her based on what they hear. Especially if she's in a position (such as hers) where people look up to her she needs to be careful what she says.

Frankly, I hate noisy people in theatres and cinemas, you pay good money to listen and watch, and I'm surprised they weren't thrown out, because I probably would have complained if I couldn't hear the show.
It's consideration they need to learn. Yes it's offensive, but they were stopping her doing her job properly, so she's allowed to vent. Yes, she was rude, but those girls were so much ruder, so who was worse? Personally, I think the fangirls are. But that could be because I can't stand screaming girls who ruin a perfectly nice day out at the theatre.

They paid to see the show, and as far as I know there's no rule against them screaming. (Even though I can see how annoying that would be.) The actress is supposed to be the professional. If you were serving tables at a restaurant, would you insult the guests just because a few of them were on their cell phones or making loud noises? No. You might politely ask them to stop disturbing the other customers, but that's it.

If I were in the theatre trying to enjoy the show, while a bunch of screaming idiots were making a fuss and ruining everything, I certainly wouldn't be offended. But of course, if I was one of those screaming idiots, chances are I wouldn't have realised that I was being flamingly inconsiderate (i.e., HOW DARE SHE, WE ARE HARDCORE FANS JUST SHOWING OUR LOVE) and therefore would RAGE against Elphaba. Or, in a little different scenario, I would REALISE that I was being inconsiderate and ruining shit for everyone else, so instead of shutting up and behaving, I'd get embarrassed and try to blame Elphaba for calling me out on it.

Poor theatre etiquette bothers me to no end. I don't care if those fans were offended, they already offended the rest of the people trying to watch the show.

I don't blame her. I can see how it would be pretty annoying, for her and for all the other audience members.

No there's no official article, I just know people that were there and they told me about what happened and how they were so offended.
There was meant to be a press released apology but Kerry (Elphaba in question) won't give one.

No I wouldn't be offended. If I was in the audience and a group of people had been stopping me enjoying the performance I would be expecting them to be kicked out -- everyone else has paid too. Remember it will be very distracting to her whilst performing too. I would have probably used stronger language if I were her, I think it's disgusting that they behave like that.

I really don't think they should be offended if they are shouting and screaming, I'm surprised they weren't thrown out, a theatre is not a cinema and certainly not a rock concert! They treated the person they were supposedly a fan of with no respect and gave the play she was in no respect. If I were her I wouldn't apologise, sure what you said was rude but she only offended the fangirls, they offended her and the rest of the audience, seriously I hate people who make any noise in a theatre.

Then again, two wrongs don't make a right.

I can only relate this to me playing in an orchestra and people screaming over our performance. I would be so upset. Plus, I don't know about those girls, but if I were to pay that much to see a performance, I'd kind of.. you know, want to see the performance?

Something sort of similar with the mic being on backstage happened to Brittany Spears didn't it?

As a fellow Theatre geek, I have to say that I'm not at all surprised. Yes, it was a mean thing to say, but Jesus, you do NOT go into a Theatre and scream like it's a concert! It makes it extremely difficult for all areas of cast and crew to do their jobs, not to mention it's offensive to the actors who are trying to perform. There is a time and place to clap and scream; between scenes and during curtain call. Those girls were being quite inconsiderate.

Honestly, I probably would say something similar if it were me.

I'd probably be offended if I'd been them. But I just wouldn't be screaming like hyenas in a theatre. Simple enough. They act rudely in the theatre, they can expect rude behavior back at them.

Ugh, no. Well, technically yes. If I had the mindset as those girls, I'm sure I would be offended. But it isn't right to be offended by this. They upset her and were extremely rude, why should she do something for them? I find that the right move on her part.

When people are frustrated, they vent in private. We all do it. I don't think anyone has the right to look down on her for doing something that every human on earth does - especially in a situation where she had every right to be angry.

It may be rude of her, however, it's also rude of the noisy people. It seems she wanted to have let some anger off in private, which is considerate of her. The only need for an apology would be so she looks good in the fans' eyes, after all, they pay to see her, she doesn't pay to see them (unless there are fellow actors/actresses in the audience).

If the people were being noisy in the audience, then I have to ask, isn't there some form of security there? I'm sure the play has some breaks, so during a break, throw the noisy people out. They paid for their ticket, however, I'm sure each theater has rules, and if you violate them, you get the boot. Not only being potentially against the rules, other audience members came to see and hear the play, not to hear and see some noisy little pests who couldn't keep their mouths shut and sit down.

Contrary to earlier posts, there ARE rules against being noisy in a theatre. Theatre has a long history and tradition and part of it governs behaviour while watching a show. Even a musical. Honestly, if I ever became an annoying fangirl like that, I'd *want* my idol to whip me into shape! I also don't think she needs to apologize. She's not sorry she said that. Those girls make her job so much harder and ignore the "local customs" so to speak. They are in the wrong, not she.

I don't have time to read all of the posts so I'm just responding. No they don't have the right to be offended. They were being rude and showing poor ettiqute. A musical is not a concert you sit in your seat and keep your mouth shut until the end. I would have said the same thing or something similar if I were her. It's VERY annoying to be on stage when annoying stupid people are yelling at you.

i'm pretty sure that there ARE rules about being loud, but nevertheless, they might have paid to see the show, but so did hundred of other people who couldn't hear the acters because of the crazed fans. they need to get over it, they're luck they weren't kicked out! If i was the leading lady, at a scene change, i would have asked security to tell them that they either need to shut up or they will be removed from the theatre.
i really hate it when people talk at shows, but screaming and carrying on is a whole new level of obnoxious!
