Say what?

I'm sorry... My brain is having problems comprehending this level of ignorance.

Wow. I can understand a lapse in judgment, but this guy is fricking stupid. He should probably be electroshocked for his own good. It might prevent another case like this, because he was obviously out of his right mind.

Er...did I read that right? He said he was misunderstood?

How freaking ignorant can people get. I'm sorry, but I won't ever understand how someone can look a suicidal child in the eye and tell them next time, cut deeper so they don't live.

That is seriously messed up.

I find this horrible. I think that the man should not be working with kids if he is that insensitive.

According to the article, the teacher claims that "He meant no harm" in what he said, and that his words were "Taken out of context". What the hell was he trying to say then?

I don't care if he has tenure, he deserves to be fired, have his teaching license revoked, and go into sensitivity training.

Heh, I took it to be rather funny, or perhaps that's just me. Honestly, lighten up, it clearly was a joke. If I were there, I can say 100% that I'd be laughing if the teacher said that (or if I were the teacher). Moral of the story: no need to take things so seriously.

suicide is never a joke and when a kid a just tried to kill himself...u dont joke about it n tell the kid to "cut deeper"...i mean suicide IS a serious thing...its NOT a jokeing matter. coming from sum1 who has tried to end their life n was told something simalar...it makes u feel so much worse n infact MORE suicidel...ur more likely to go out n "finish it off"

they should have stuck with the 1 decision a fired him

Wow, what a stupid miserable fuck. I'd definitely be slashing his tires if I lived there....
Its so stupid how firing a teacher is such an "arduous process", even if they cant teach well. If they cant teach, why the hell are they in this profession??? And if they're too stupid and ignorant to deal with kids who go through things like this, they need to find a new fucking job.

I agree, and I often feel the same way. What that teacher said was wrong.

Wow. Really?

I don't really see how that's funny. That's someone life. And I honestly would have punched a teacher if they told me that.

I think this is sick and disgusting, especially that he still has his job even with his huge performance of lack of compassion.

Wooooow. I completely lost all respect I had for you. Always have to be the one that swims against stream, huh? The fact of the matter is you don't tell someone who is suicidal that they can't even do that right. He is in 8th grade... and... well, even if he said that to a 30 year old person, if they were in that state you don't say that. Some people have feelings, Nightmare.

I think we all need to find out who to write letters to to get this man fired, or start a petition or something. This man should not, by any means, keep his job. This is completely absurd.

I respect your opinion, but you gotta realize that when your in a state of mind like that, your very vulnerable, and your sense of humor is practically non existent, and that teacher should have known better. He should have taken the kid aside, talked with him and try to get him some help. Attention seeking or not, suicide or cutting is something that should always be taken seriously, you know? Because you can never know whats going on in someone's head and that little joke he made (not to mention embarass him in front of the class) could easily push the kid to do it again.

And depression is a rather serious and common disorder also, however, you see so many kids parading around, listening to some sad music and "cutting" has for some odd reason become more or less a fashion trend for those people or a form of attention-seeking. I don't know how the kid exactly was and neither do you, so it's quite possible the teacher felt the kid was trying to get attention.

No, I'm not always the one to flow against, my views on many things simply tend to clash and disagree with many others, such as those of TH. As for the "people have feelings", I'll take that to another debate, however, to summarize, feelings, compassion, empathy and such lead to weakness. However, I am not here to gain anyone's respect, so if I lost all respect someone had of me, then so be it.

Suicide should be taken seriously but as I mentioned already, with all this attention-seeking, it can get hard to tell whose for real and whose not. I'm sure the teacher has had to deal with some attention-seekers and thus, thought that this kid was the same.

What was the kid trying to prove by bringing up his apparent attempted suicide anyway? sounds like he wanted some attention to me, and attention is what he is getting.

any suicide atempt should be taken seriously...i wrote an artical a few yrs bak after talking 2 a group of other young ppl who had tried to kill themself or hurt themselves (i also count myself in this) not one of them (there where about 15) wanted attention...only help...no1 should be judged on if it was 4 attention or not because you can not see into their mind...

soz i just have alot of strong veiws on this sort of thing so if i seem harsh at all i dont mean to be

even if the kid wanted attention (which i dont believe he did) no teacher has the right to say that sort of thing...no1 does

I think what the teacher said was out of order and stupid, whether or not the student was being genuine or seeking attention he shouldn't have said it because if he genuinely did it, it could cause him to do it again and if he did it for attention, what's stopping him doing it again to prove to his teacher he can?

Arghhh, reading that made me so mad. Listen, attention seeking or not, why mock it? Even if they ARE doing it for attention, they're STILL hurting themselves and STILL putting their lives in danger. And who are we to decide who's attention seeking or not?

An eight grade suicidal kid is going to take something like that to heart. And what if there was another suicidal kid in the class? What if the lack of respect for this kid, pushed some other kid over the edge?

What that teacher did was completely and utterly WRONG. You don't joke about something like that. And why not? Because it's not FUNNY.

wow, I have nothing to say to this. It's just awful. If I were the kid, I probably would have turned around and said "okay" and tried right there and then.
That's just...horrible. It's one thing for a kid to make a comment like that, but a TEACHER?! I mean, I agree that he probably shouldn't have told the class, but then again maybe he didn't want rumors because he was probably out for at least a week.
and as for YourNightmare's comments, he can have his opinion...and if you've read his threads you'd know it's just how he is. Although I disagree beyond strongly with them.

Joke or not. It was still wrong. Some things you just don't joke about, if someone had been raped and come back to school you wouldn't joke about that would you?

I can't actually believe what i've just read. Well actually, I probably can, it just looks so much more 'official' in the news. I mean, it wouldn't be the first time stupid comments like this have been made by adults to younger people, but this is just disgusting. I hope the man is proud of himself, it must've made him look really clever saying that. News like that just makes me sick.

The kid tried to kill himself, did the teacher not think that taking the piss is going to make things worse,
