School forces student to change out of kilt. - May 19th 2009, 06:37 PM

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30795426/ The principal of a Utah middle school has been asked to apologize for forcing a kilt-wearing student to change his clothes. Weber School District spokesman Nate Taggart says Craig Jessop has been asked to extend an apology to 14-year-old student Gavin McFarland of Hooper after the school official's comments Wednesday. Gavin says he wore the kilt twice in the past two weeks to Rocky Mountain Junior High as a prop for an art project. Jessop told the boy that the outfit could be misconstrued as cross-dressing. Taggart says the district recognizes the kilt as an expression of the boy's Scottish heritage and that the kilt was not inappropriate. Kilts are traditional Scottish apparel generally worn by men for formal or special occasions.

Amusing. Apparently the principle wasn't too great at geography or foreign cultures. I'm sure the boy wasn't too offended.

I heard about this. My friend linked me to it on Fark:

Kilts are now cross-dressing huh? I must tell this to that big burly guy at my school, from a distance of course. Lol, this really made me laugh.I doubt the kid was to offended

And even if it is cross dressing, what's wrong with that? So what if he identifies with a different gender... he should be allowed to wear a skirt if he wants to...

Hahaha. It's funny how a lot of the people who are supposed to be educating us are idiots.

Even if the kid had been cross-dressing, who cares as long as it covers him up and protects him from the elements?

The chances are that the school had a uniform code and the kid was breaking it therefore it's utterly fair for them to ask him to change out of it.

If they didn't have a uniform code then meh, I guess it's a bit unfair but since when has something as trivial as this been news worthy?

Since (almost) every city in the country has a newspaper, and a website for the paper. And then google news comes around and someone searches for random things, and goes :O and puts it on TH or some other forum. And someone on that other forum goes :O and puts it on TH.

Personally, I find this stupid. I can't believe the principal told him that. Well, I can but it angers me.

Since when is cross dressing against school rules? It seems rather sexist to say that guys can't wear skirts.

I've read about this happening in another situation & apparently the other students parents care...they don't want their kids to be exposed to cross-dressing (even if it's not!)...it's not like the students don't know about it already haha.

It's very rare to have a school that doesn't have a strict uniform code (Which I'm assuming if he felt okay wearing a kilt they didn't?) that says no cross-dressing.

We had a kid suspended for wearing a skirt to school. We ended up having Gay Pride in front of our school and people refused to go to class 'till they let him come back.

At most public high schools in my area there is virtually no dress code. They're still hung up on not letting us wear PJs though. Something about not wanting us to look lazy. Too late.

And that's really awesome what the kids did at your school. I'd have loved to see that.

My biggest problem is the fact that the principal considered it to be 'cross-dressing'. The student obviously had a valid reason for wearing the kilt, which was for an art project.

Whats so wrong with wearing different clothing?

SERIOUSLY, I like wearing weird things to throw off people's little equilibrium's in their heads.

I would proudly wear a dress or skirt. This is just another proof that Freedom isn't Free...

Heeheehee
A guy at my old school wore a kilt to Prom. I can't imagine this story playing out where I'm from.
But then again, we also had a cross-dresser. He graduated my grade 9 year.

Intolerant b***ard.
even if the guy *was* cross-dressing, why shouldn't he? I wear jeans all the time... why shouldn't he be allowed to wear a skirt?

i think that was unfair. and even if he did cross dress so what its ok. people should wear what makes them feel right. as long as it doesnt violate whatever school dress code there is at the school then its fine. at my school guys can wear skirts and dresses but they just have to be the appropriate length stated in the dress code.
