Anti-Americanism in the West - November 7th 2016, 07:21 PM

So... what is "anti-Americanism"???

I've started doing research on this recently. It's not something I fully understand. It is somewhat connected with a previous thread I made here few months ago (http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f38-c...ssia-so-great/).

I'm not talking about anti-Americanism in Arab states (where it is quite strong). I'm talking about anti-Americanism... in the West.

And I'm not talking about reasonable criticisms of the American system. I'm talking about all-out outrage. These people are sometimes characterized by behaviors such as coming onto a thread... copying & pasting a wall of text (which almost nobody reads) listing all of America's war crimes since it was created hundreds of years ago... and acting like that's the end of the debate. Of course, anyone in disagreement with them is an "uneducated fool brainwashed by mainstream media" etc etc. (boring, bullshit, heard it all before)

I have noticed this regularly being correlated with Russian names/aliases on the internet, so that's why I think it could be related to my previous thread that I linked above. It could be Putin supporters just spreading bullshit on Western news websites. People who are up to date on current events, will understand how this has been associated with the right wing and Trump supporters. Hilary Clinton has done things such as accusing the alt-right of being funded by Putin (if there is any evidence of this, I am interested to know).

BUT, I have also noticed this very strongly being correlated, not with "right wing" points of views... but left wing points of views. This is usually founded in beliefs such as "fuck capitalism", Marxist beliefs, over-emphasizing America's war crimes whilst forgetting that most of the world is guilty of crimes against other people.

I have noticed that this habit of exaggerating America's crimes is common to both these groups, right wing, and left wing. If the Russians are behind it on the right wing, then it is presumably to spread discord among Americans/weaken their identity.

I have reached the conclusion that radical leftists doing this, are very much after the same thing. They also prefer to dissolve national identities, but for different reasons. They do it in favor of a more "globalist" approach, with open borders, etc. (different debate).

What doesn't make sense here though, is right wing supporters being "anti-American" in that sense... because this is completely discordant with the most typical right-wing belief in a "strong national identity", "strong patriotism", etc. It's why I think it's more Putin bullshit trolling the internet. And these "Putin supporters" are fanatics (you don't achieve 90% approval ratings as a head-of-state like Putin has, unless you are using intense propaganda). It is extremely difficult to argue with fanatics. In contrast, my experiences of arguing with ordinary right wing/Trump supporters are generally quite normal. We don't agree on everything, but at least we listen to each other. You get a few loons (like you do anywhere), but that's normal.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT do other people think??? Anyone else observed similar things? I don't see anyone writing about this much, anywhere. Wikipedia lists various other countries, and their anti-Americanism... which is not what I'm interested in in this case. There are some books, but I can't download them anywhere either... so I'm kind of just left drawing my own conclusions.... and am wondering if anyone here has anything to say about this.

Then politics doesn't care about you either. Truth. You've got to make your voice heard, if you want to be listened to. But that's too logical for some people, so let me go a step further. Not making your voice heard, leaves other people free to hijack it by speaking on your behalf, even if they don't actually give a shit about you. That's politics. So, make your voice heard. That's not a quote from anywhere. That's just me.

In the past, I have seen moderators and admins participate in behavior that stereotyped Americans. It was in a thread in the debate forum. This was before the big crash in 08/09ish. It basically was a "bash" the US thread.

I can see people being unpatriotic. I would consider myself somewhat unpatriotic because even before we selected an unqualified buffoon to the most important job in the country, all the so-called patriots run around yelling about how great our country is before saying that we need to make America great again. And their definition of greatness usually includes things that I would consider ridiculous, like our military acting like the world's police. They never acknowledge that our foreign policy stances usually destroy the country in question (say, Iraq). Also, our governmental positions are allowed to be sold to the highest bidder, and bribery is basically legal. People don't ever vote in their own interests, so they elect people like (name a Republican) whose policies won't help them and will drive our economy off a cliff. And if you ask these people what made America great before, they'll probably say something based on the myth of Ronald Reagan. Oh yeah, and guns. They'll mention guns. And our country has an incredible amount of unmitigated stupidity related to the media and our education system. We were too dumb to understand Common Core, and what was good about it. As for the media, many people started with corporate news before locking themselves into echo chambers like Breitbart and Infowars, the two worst "news" sites on the internet.
The idea that every president has committed war crimes is mostly true, save for Jimmy Carter, who was branded as 'weak' during his presidency. A lot of Americans think greatness involves bullying other countries- but they usually express that in a different way, like that we're "fighting for freedom", or we're "bringing them democracy".
I'm patriotic in the sense that I support the ideals this country is supposed to stand for, but America has become a shell of its former self. We don't embody those ideals anymore, we just elected somebody who runs completely contrary to them. We took the American Dream that people fought and died for and flushed it down the toilet.

Finally some response under this thread lol.

Personally, I never considered myself a patriot of any sort. My mind just doesn't "work" that way.

But that doesn't at all mean that I am indifferent to certain attacks on patriotism. Perhaps a better way to word this... is that I often get quite irritable when I figure that someone is "anti-(insert label)". I'm a bit too tired to feel like explaining this.
