Why You Won't See 21st Century Breakdown at Wal-Mart - May 22nd 2009, 05:22 PM

http://new.music.yahoo.com/green-day...licy--61988870

Quote:
Green Day has the most popular CD in the country, but you won't be able to find it at your local Wal-Mart. The band says the giant superstore chain refused to stock its latest CD, "21st Century Breakdown," because Wal-Mart wanted the album edited for language and content, and they refused.
"Wal-Mart's become the biggest retail outlet in the country, but they won't carry our record because they wanted us to censor it," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in a recent interview.
While Wal-Mart sells CDs from acts known for raunchy content, including Eminem's latest, they offer customers the "clean" version of those CDs, which are edited for content that may be objectionable. But in Armstrong's view, "There's nothing dirty about our record."
"They want artists to censor their records in order to be carried in there," he said. "We just said no. We've never done it before. You feel like you're in 1953 or something."
"21st Century Breakdown" contains curses and some references considered adult.
Wal-Mart said that it's the company's long-standing policy not to stock any CD with a parental advisory sticker.
"As with all music, it is up to the artist or label to decide if they want to market different variations of an album to sell, including a version that would remove a PA rating," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien said. "The label and artist in this case have decided not to do so, so we unfortunately can not offer the CD."
But bassist Mike Dirnt said: "As the biggest record store in the America, they should probably have an obligation to sell people the correct art."
Not being sold at Wal-Mart didn't stop the band — which kicks off a U.S. tour summer tour in Seattle on July 3 — from landing at the top of the album charts this week. "21st Century Breakdown" sold about 215,000 copies since it's debut on Friday.
The album is the follow-up to their multiplatinum, Grammy-winning CD "American Idiot," and like that album, deals with weighty topics. While "American Idiot" spoke to the frustration over the presidency of George W. Bush and the Iraq War, this CD speaks to the loss of innocence and confusion in today's society.
While Armstrong, Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool are still top-sellers without Wal-Mart, Armstrong said the store's policy is disappointing, considering it has become the dominant seller of CDs with the decline of traditional music stores.
"If you think about bands that are struggling or smaller than Green Day ... to think that to get your record out in places like that, but they won't carry it because of the content and you have to censor yourself," he said. "I mean, what does that say to a young kid who's trying to speak his mind making a record for the first time? It's like a game that you have to play. You have to refuse to play it."
Note: This is not a thread about the quality of Green Day's music If you want to talk about that, I believe there's a thread for it in the Sports & Entertainment section.

All I know is I'd rather have my niece listen to Green Day's entire collection uncensored than have her listen to some of the other "artists" who censor their stuff. What do you guys think?

I totally agree.
It has the parental guidance sticker.
People aren't idiots, if they buy music by Green Day they'll expect some language and stuff stupid really

Um, why should Wal-mart stock a CD that doesn't fit with their policy? Although, to be honest, it's a bit weird that we sell R-rated movies and M-rated video games. We do card on those though. I've refused sales for people not having ID when they try to buy a m-rated game.

There's nothing wrong with Walmart following ridiculous policies it sets for itself - if it doesn't want the profit they would make from selling the CDs, that's their decision. The policy does seem a bit stupid though, and I think they could stand to review it.

I guess it'll be a fail for walmart. They'll be missing out on a lot of money from sales of that album.

If they don't stock the CD that's their loss. People need to speak their mind. Without the language they wouldn't be Green Day and there'd barely be any point bringing out the record...

Hey, people can just spend their money elsewhere. Wal-mart isn't exactly making much of a statement with this.

I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart anyway.

Good for Green Day for not editing the CD.

I didn't know they even sold edited versions of albums. I knew they did that with movies but never knew about the music. I'm glad that Green Day is refusing to edit it though. Wal-mart is being stupid in my opinion, but they can go ahead and be stupid.

I find it amusing that Green Day feels the need to do so much self-congratulatory back-slapping for not selling out.

Congrats to WalMart for sticking to their principles.

I bought a CD from Walmart once, never made that mistake again (not that they even stock the butchered versions of when I listen to now :P). I bought a Seether CD with a song named "F**k It". You couldn't even hear the chorus correctly. I was so pissed.

Buy from iTunes or eMusic or a traditional music store if there's one near you. Don't buy the junk Walmart tries to pawn off on unsuspecting victims

Sure, they sold a lot without having it in Walmart, but imagine how many more copies they would have sold if they just made an edited copy like most other bands do. Hey, it's their CD, so it's up to them, but I just think that it's kind of stupid. People do buy edited CDs. And in smaller places like where I live, Walmart is the ONLY store within a good two hours or so that sells CDs... Yeah, the edited version works for a lot of people, needless to say.

Either way, if someone wants the music bad enough, they don't even need the CD. Why pay for it or go out of your way for it when you can just download it.

But anyway, I think they made a stupid move. But I don't listen to their music anyway, so I don't care much.

Wal-mart doesn't need the sales from Green Day CD. Not selling it won't make a dent in Wal-mart's sales for the year. It's just Green Day getting publicity for themselves.

Wal-mart is large enough as it is. One CD isn't going to make their empire crumble or sky-rocket upwards right away. Sure they'll lose some business, however, they can easily survive regardless. All I see in this is Green Day stirring up some shit to get publicity without having to pay much for advertising. At least Wal-Mart didn't go against its own policies, which is good. Then again, Green Day could've allowed for the censored version and make a decent amount more money, however, they'll feel the loss a lot more than Wal-Mart will from a financial perspective.

Dude, like, censoring a musicians music is basically selling another CD. There is a REASON the music is like that, and you can't expect someone to change it for you. If Wal-mart won't stalk it, that's not Green Day's problem, and I'm actually pretty impressed that they refused.

I seriously doubt that. The sales wouldn't go sky-rocketing just because they're selling a Green Day CD. So there's really no difference. I think it's good that they stuck with their policy.

I sense that Green Day's sales will jump because of this. With iTunes and other ways of buying music online, the need of CDs and the music in WalMart will die down. The CD selection in my WalMart is sad.

That being said, WalMart can do whatever in the hell they like. They have plenty of money and I doubt not taking Green Day's CD will really have a lot to do with their money.

I don't like going to WalMart. I've watched my town slowly die because of the WalMart about 30 minutes down the road. In the end, I'll pay 20 cents more for something in the little store a mile up the road because it is close to home. I buy anything I can from stores like that to support local businesses.

I think its a stupid policy (I personally dislike censorship and listening to a song with a bunch of blanks in it is really annoying) and they could just put the Parental Advisory sticker on it but hey, whatever. Obviously, this isnt going to affect either party so to each his own.

Speaking of song censorship...

A classmate of mine, who is from the US, said that down there they will sometimes bleep out the lines "imagine there's no heaven", "no hell below us" and "no religion too" from John Lennon's song Imagine. Have any of you guys noticed this? I couldn't believe it when he told me that. I think that's insane!

Yeah, it takes away the whole meaning of the song. That's why I can't stand censorship; it screws with the whole free expression thing. If parents want to hide stuff from their kids then it's their business, but they shouldn't expect artists to butcher their work just to appease them.

Exactly. And I actually know some parents like that. Too bad Green Day would rather make their point known than to allow the fans with parents like that to have a CD.

What's wrong with Greenday wanting to get some kind of message across, and that message only being appropriate for mature audiences? From what I remember in the banned books thread, most people agreed books shouldn't be censored, but just read at appropriate ages. What's the difference between that and having music which is appropriate at some ages and not others?

Not around so much now that school's started

"Live a good life.
If there are gods and they are just,
then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

Both held to thier beliefs. I don't see a problem with either one of them. It shouldn't be that big of a deal, except maybe to praise both for not backing down.

if green day had any integrity and/or "Punk rock" values, they wouldn't even want their cd to be in Wal Mart
