Dad gets 100 years for poisoning kids' soup - May 22nd 2009, 06:05 PM

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30884902/
Quote:
A Georgia man has been sentenced to 100 years in prison for poisoning his children to extort money from Campbell's Soup Co. William Cunningham was sentenced Thursday after a jury found him guilty on seven counts of aggravated assault for forcing the children in 2006 to eat soup laced with prescription drugs and lighter fluid. His 3-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter were hospitalized twice. A family member said the youngsters may suffer lifelong respiratory problems from lung damage caused by the lighter fluid. Cunningham's wife has since divorced him.

He deserves to die. That kind of greed is inexcusable.

And sadly enough, this is nowhere near the worst cases of child abuse.

The most shocking thing about this is how people think they can make a judgement call on whether another human being should live or die based solely on 4 sentences in a news article.

What the hell. That was a really, really stupid idea. There's other ways to scam money without poisoning your children with lighter fluid....

I've never imagined a person could be greedy enough to poison their own kids...
What is the world coming to?
I hope he enjoys prison.

I'm more shocked at how most of the posters are willing to let the guy die or be in prison or jail after reading just a few lines about him. 100 year sentence wouldn't be given if he had done this to an adult, so I think the sentence is too extreme.

100 years? What? There are lots of murders that get lesser sentences than that - 100 years is ridiculous for aggravated assault, even if it was against children. Is the 100 years consecutive sentencing? As in 15ish years for each count of assault served one after the other?

So true.

The kids lived, so why is he getting 100 years? Some murderers/rapists don't even get 15.

Why spend tax payer dollars to keep someone that disgustingly cruel alive?

Well, for one, it costs more money to utilize the death penalty than to give a life sentence.

Why does it cost more to kill someone than to keep him in prison for life?

The extra cost of keeping an inmate on death row as opposed to a maximum security prison is about $90 000 per year per inmate. The appeals process means that when someone gets the death penalty, it will take years before they're ever executed. Most death-row inmates spend at minimum a decade on death row - $900 000 for each of them. Some prisoners spend up to 20 years on death row - inmates like that would be costing the taxpayers an extra $1 800 000 each.

The actual cost of executing them isn't extremely high - pay the executioner, pay for the last meal, pay for the undertaker's services etc. But even just the trial in a capital punishment case is more expensive than any other case because of the life at stake. Evidence gathering is more expensive - you not only have to collect and interpret evidence to determine guilt, but you also have to support or contradict a death sentence. In the US, all sentences of death face a mandatory review by the state supreme court - that's another $70 000. If the case proceeds further than that into all the appeals process (and most of them do), you get a cost of about $275 000 for each individual appeal. Most capital punishments have several appeals. This is quickly adding up.

As of January 1, 2009, the US had 3,297 death row inmates. So every year, keeping them on death row costs $90 000 (the additional cost of one inmate per year) x 3297; that's $296,730,000! And that's not even the flat rate - that's how much more it costs than if they were in a maximum security prison. And guess who's paying for all that? Taxpayers.

Maybe the first time it happened there wasn't any clear evidence that he was purposefully trying to poison them.

i dont think he deserves to die. i mean the kids didnt even die not that that makes the fact that he poisoned them any less wrong. but he shouldnt die. and 100 years is a little extreme. thats just what i think. i mean no he shouldnt be out for a long long time. maybe life with a small chance of parole is in order but not 100 years. and i think even life is a little much but u know if it had to be like the absolute worst i would give him life with a small chance of parole. people do worse things and dont get that much so i do think this is a little unfair.

100 years seems a lot to me. I think its horrible, but we don't know what else he had going on. For all we know, he could be about to lose his house, its still inexcusable, but I don't believe in judging. He probably had no idea they were going to get so ill, and its not like they died.

100 years seems a bit pointless to be honest. Hell most likely be dead 60 years into his scentence.

I was a bit confused by that at first, too. But I have since found out that the reason people, like this lunatic, are given these amounts of time to serve is only to prevent them from getting out sooner on parol and whatnot.

There would have to be proof that he poisoned them in order for a child services to step in. If it's speculation only, then that's no good. We have the benefit of looking back on the event and being told he did poison them, however, at the time when they were hospitalized, such information probably wasn't confirmed.

I'm sure it was shown that they got poison into them but you have to place it in the father's hands as him giving it to them. Without that link, you could point to anyone or anything as the culprit. I also assume that the father did something to demonstrate he is a fit parent and does not pose as a harm to the children.

Of course now we see that that was not the case, however, you cannot reasonably look at what we know now and say "why didn't they do that then?".

I see your point but social services should still have been involved. An enquiry at least.

No, but as I said above, in the UK, there is (nearly always) an enquiry from child protection if something like this happens.
