http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_gay_marriage

Just in from CNN...the California Supreme Court upheld PropHate (Proposition 8). The 18,000 marriages will be upheld, however.

Laaaame. One giant step backward, but we shall advance again.

Such a sad day in California.

If anything, at least those 18,000 couples get to stay married.

I would almost want them to nullify them though...I mean I am soo happy that they will be upheld, buuut it's like "well we think that it's wrong buuut we're not going to take the time to get rid of what we truly believe in so we're just going to cop out."

Is it sad that after I heard this the first thing I was doing was looking to see if any protests were set up?

I think this is messed up beyond reason. And it really pisses me off. And I'm confused as to ANY reason why gay marriage should not be 100% legal.

I'm so glad I live in Mass. The original Gay State. But this is terrible, but they seem to have some sort of logic to their decision. Next time gay marriage comes up, I think it will pass.

There is no logical reason for gay marriage, in comparison to straight marriage, to be illegal.

Ohh Michael, lucky youuuu

I think, responding to CNN's question of "what will gay rights be like 10 years," that we will receive what is equally ours. Especially with this president, these times, and all the people who are coming out with the truth.

I do think it's a bit odd they're letting previous marriages stand. I think it's stupid not to allow gay marriage, but at the same time, if you make gay marriage unlawful, in the interest of being non-preferential, shouldn't it be unlawful for all gay marriages?

That made me SO MAD. There is supposed to be seperation between church and state, plus, they already legalized it, they shouldn't be allowed to be like "Yeah sucks to be you, we change our minds!"
What happens to the gay couples who were already married? Is it still valid?

It's not really surprising. I mean come on, there are always going to be people who are completely against gay marriage, it doesn't come as a surprise to me that a bunch of idiots decided to vote against gay marriage. As much as I hate to say it, there's a bigger change of gay marriage being banned everywhere than there is of people ever fully accepting it as 'normal.'

Of all the states...why California? I thought that was the gayest state in the US? At LEAST let the gayest state be gay (if it's true)!

I'm against gay marriage, so I don't think much of it. The government was pretty stupid, but the majority of people voted against gay marriage and I guess the people have spoken.

It appears homophobia and denial of equal rights is as strong as ever. I still find no constitutional or logical backing for why gays shouldn't be allowed to marry.

Don't like gay marriage?? Don't get one. It's more or less just a LEGAL issue binding two people together. Regardless of religious affiliation.

Equal rights under the law is what I'm saying.

I find this to be so similar to the civil rights movement in the 40s, 50s, and 60s... I see the gay rights movement nowadays as being kind of like the 50s. There's a good amount of support for the movement, from kids (gay and straight), but not many adults are for it. It'll take 7-10 years for this to federal support.

except gay people aren't being shot with fire houses, attacked with dogs, and aren't forced to use seperate facilities from straight people.

What do you mean by this? Like who doesn't "go to church with you"?

Also, in one of my religion classes they told us that Ohio doesn't support gay marriage because they don't want two girls who are friends to go and get married when they aren't gay.

This is an example of a law that should not be put up to a vote. It's an issue of being given equal rights under the law; if the majority of Californians believed black people should be segregated, they wouldn't pass a law like that, because it would be discriminatory and wouldn't be respecting the rights of black people. But for some reason, the majority of Californians being ignorant is a good reason to restrict a person's rights. The only argument against gay marriage is a religious one, and religion has absolutely no place in law. Laws have to be made objectively, and Californians just clearly showed they can't think about this objectively, so they shouldn't have the right to vote on it.

Exactly what I was going to say. Thank you.
If the informed voters have anything to say about it, gay marriage will be legal in California someday. Saying that "a marriage is between a man and a woman" is completely irrelevant. Legal marriage is a legal issue and it should be treated as such.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that this is just a money issue for the government. They have to give tax breaks to married couples. If they disallow gay marriage, that's a bunch of tax breaks they don't have to give. Just a random thought.
