I will admit that I prefer using the incorrect generic term than to use something derogatory and xenophobic.
Coronaviruses do cause a range of other diseases, but this particular type (a novel coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2) is what causes COVID-19 (which is the name of the disease - coronavirus disease 2019). I think by this point just calling it "coronavirus" is sufficient (in the vernacular at least), since it's the one everyone's talking about.

I agreed with this. There are 4 common strains, and two other novel strains.

I think my only main reason to call it COVID-19 right now, is because of how many people don't understand that there ARE other strains of Coronavirus that are not severe. Because most people if you tell them "I have coronavirus" Everyone assumes its COVID-19 and this big horrible thing, when the other strains are still around and it may cause a lot of unnecessary panic, because the common strains don't have actual names, it letters and numbers. At least that is my reasoning in my head.

My boyfriend is a medical lab technician, so he works in a hospital running different tests. And when we get chit-chatting about his work, he will mention what the common viruses he sees that day. For example he was mentioning that they are seeing almost no positive flu tests. But a rise in some of the common coronavirus, and another virus.

The numbers for my area got released recently. Over 50 cases. I live somewhere relatively close-knit where there's only about a thousand people, so I suppose it's just as well I've been stuck in my home like a bird locked in its cage. -_-

Over 300 in my area. Someone a few streets down from me has it though not sure whether they have actually been tested or not (I'm not sure who is being tested these days).

I'm a mixture of anxious and resigned. There's nothing I can do apart from stay in.

My friend might have it. She'd be the first person I actually know (rather than a friend of a friend) who has it. She's waiting on test results. I am really worried about her.

I know, I really hope he's okay! I've heard he's doing well and responding to treatment.

Will be thinking of you and your friend. I hope she is okay!

I don't think anyone I know personally has it, but my mom's coworker's stepson passed away from it, and his mother is on a ventilator. So freaking sad. The stepson has underlying conditions.

I can't speak to the above poster but I can say that America is seeing relatively big jumps still because people aren't sheltering in place like they should. I know there are a lot of conservatives who think COVID 19 is similar to the flu and they believe that we are over reacting.

I know on Friday my county had something like 30 new cases. One county next to me had something like 24 cases just yesterday.

I'm not really following other cities or counties in my state either because I'll get overwhelmed. I know my states done well at flattening the curve because my governor was the first to issue stay at home orders and he did it quite early.

I fear that due to people not taking this seriously that we are gonna continue seeing rises in cases. It's really scary.

Thanks for that! I know over here, there's been a lot of reports on America and Europe because of how hard they have been hit by COVID-19.

Two scary updates not sure if they've been shared on here.

1. Felines can catch coronavirus. There's been several cases.

2. You are not immune to coronavirus once you've recovered.

Just a little reminder of this, because I've already seen horror stories of people reacting to this.

If you have a indoor ONLY cat, and they test positive? The only way they could have gotten it is from someone in your house. They won't have gotten it somehow and will spread it to you.

I've seriously seen people start to freak out and put down their healthy cat, because they are afraid the cat will get it and give it to them.

I agree. I've heard that you can unfortunately pass it onto your pet but they can't give it to you.

Yep, these are the confirmed cases. They don't test most people either because they don't have enough tests. So only the bad cases and high risk people get recorded. Many states in the USA are like this...

People don't follow the stay at home order. People shop the open stores for fun and don't maintain social distance in public. On the rare occasion I go out for necessities, I have to move far out of the way of people who give me an offended look and still don't move!

As of this morning, over 5,000 cases and over 100 deaths total in my state.

Over here, there's limited testing too, because of the lack of tests.

Re: Corona Virus. - April 17th 2020, 04:13 PM

The UK have extended their lock down for at least another 3 weeks, but I honestly think it will be a lot longer than that before it's lifted. We're still getting between 700 and 900 deaths a day at the moment, and over 4-5 thousand new cases a day. I know that people still aren't taking social distancing seriously in some places. My sister (who doesn't live here, and so couldn't spend Easter with us this year) lives with a room mate, who has had a friend over on a few occasions, even though the official advice is that nobody should be physically interacting outside of their own households. It's people like that who are prolonging this entire thing.

I saw that China revealed an extra 1290 deaths they'd not previously reported too. I know that absolutely every badly hit country's official count is only the top of the ice berg, but I'd be interested to know peoples thoughts are on this? I know there have been SO many conspiracies since the outbreak, a lot of people here are speculating that China are hiding figures deliberately. I'm not sure what I think about this though, I think it might be extra fear mongering.

I try not to pay attention to the conspiracies. I know there are a ton out there. To be honest, I think it's possible that China concealed the truth. I think, as far as conspiracies go, it's not the strangest one out there. That being said, I am hoping if they concealed the truth that it will come out. I feel like right now all the conspiracies are just feeding into the fear and confusion. I am sure the conspiracies are going to continue until further notice too.

Actually, I think it isn't fishy at all. Simply because my state (New York) just announced the other day like over 3,000 previously unreported deaths. Because it was deaths from people who were not tested, and they tested them post-mortem and they tested positive. So it is possible that is what happened in China, they got overwhelmed, had a bunch of people die and they didn't have the time or ability to test. And now they have time to deal because things are calming down.

My state, and a couple near me have all banded together and have extended stay-at-home order till May 15th.

I'm with Sarah, I also think those previously unreported cases were post-mortem diagnosis. I don't remember the exact number for my state, but it's like a third of a percent of the state's population.

I agree with this and as testing becomes more widespread we will probably see more of this type of thing. I know my state saw an increase of hospital admissions yesterday. So that's concerning but I think it has more to do with people who are already sick getting sicker from what I can tell my state is doing really good at flattening the curve.

I've also heard that China has covered up a lot more deaths and confirmed cases then there were initially. I personally don't think things will reopen in the next month. Let's hope I'm wrong.

Almost 6400 cases now, almost 200 deaths, in my state. So glad I can go to the beach now and maybe return to non-essential work where social distancing is impossible on May 1st!

Edit: about 6500 cases this afternoon.
More protests to reopen the state by May 1st or earlier.

They've reopened the beaches here too. The government wanted to reopen everything within a month but it's unlikely that will happen.

I can't believe some places are opening their beaches back up! People are so incredibly self-centered with no consideration in regard to the health and safety of others. It's pretty disgusting.

Georgia is opening gyms and a few other places starting tomorrow I believe. I think they are going to be opening more stuff by next week.

I think there are other states that are planning to do simialrily.

7000 confirmed cases in the state now. This is estimated to be 5-10% of the actual number because we aren't testing most people with symptoms. More protests to reopen state.

Almost 7600 confirmed cases. Again, we're just not testing most people. But this afternoon, we find out if the state reopens in less than a week.

If this happens and I have to go back to work across from a major hospital, I'm going to get it, and I have a reasonable chance of dying.

1:20pm: 7800 confirmed cases.

I think a lot of people aren't being tested due to the lack of testing kits available and I believe numbers are higher because of this.

Re: Corona Virus. - April 28th 2020, 12:58 AM

I really hope this lockdown ends soon. After being at university for 3 years, then coming home and at least having freedom to come and go, straight into this. It's actually getting to become quite isolating.

I think I've just grown used to being able to have my freedom and being around other people that now it's getting rather lonely. It doesn't help that I started working out at university and now I can't do that because my gym is closed. I'm struggling to motivate myself to exercise at home because my living environment is so cluttered I barely have space to move. Alongside this, I've started worrying about my weight more. My family doesn't exactly eat healthily and I struggle to sit still for long periods of time and it's incredibly difficult not to eat out of boredom.

I've been trying to go out and do the shopping when we need it just so I can go for a walk and get exercise that way, but coming from 5 days of exercise a week to suddenly having to be stuck at home like this... it's getting very difficult.

My family have already had a huge argument so there's a lot of tension in the house and there's no where to go to be away from it all.
