Atlantic searched for lost plane - June 2nd 2009, 10:04 AM

Quote:
An 11-year-old boy from Bristol is among the 200 people presumed dead after the Air France flight from South America disappeared over the Atlantic.
Quote:
A total of 228 passengers and crew, including at least seven young children and one baby, were on board the Air France aircraft which vanished without a trace on a routine flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris Charles de Gaulle.
It was the worst commercial air disaster for almost eight years and is believed to have claimed the lives of passengers from Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and China among other countries.
Five Britons and three Irish doctors were among the 32 nationalities on board.
The 11-year-old boy was a student at Clifton College Preparatory School in Bristol. The college has confirmed he was a passenger on the doomed flight.
Another of the Britons, Arthur Coakley, from Whitby, North Yorkshire, had been working on an oil rig in Brazil for four weeks and was only on the flight because previous departures had been changed, his wife Patricia said.
He was due to return to the UK for a Mediterranean holiday with friends on the Greek island of Corfu, she added.
Mrs Coakley, who has two sons and a daughter with her husband, said: “He phoned me up from the airport to saw he was waiting for his flight.
“His flight had been changed three times and he wasn’t due on that one, he was supposed to be on an earlier flight.
“We are going on holiday on Friday to Corfu with some friends. He was very excited.”
Mrs Coakley criticised the response of the authorities in France and Brazil. She said the airline appeared to be “putting up every barrier” to those concerned about whether their relatives were on the flight.

this really is tragic. i feel so bad for the people involved and all of their families. they showed scenes at the french airport on the news last night of all the relatives waiting for news. :[
i doubt it'll ever be found, considering they said that the search area is 3 times the size of europe.

I think it's going to be incredibly hard to find the plane. A long time ago, a plane disappeared over Lake Michigan, and that plane still hasn't been found (nearly half a century later). Lake Michigan is many times smaller than the Atlantic, too.

Unfortunately, I think they'll only find floating bits of wreckage and some human remains.

This is such a sad story, I can't imagine what all the friends and family are going through right now.

I hope that they are able to gain some kind of closure, being left to wonder would be even harder than the loss itself.

I heard it in the news, they already found some parts of the plane near Brazil. How sad so many people died.

Re: Atlantic searched for lost plane - June 3rd 2009, 08:01 PM

This is what scares me to get on planes. And this was a routine route.

I did wake up this morning to hear they had found some wreckage. And I think if they find the plane, that would be so much better for everyone involved. The parents, family, friends, and everyone who knew them need closure for the situation.

Things like this are always so tragic. And here's where the "what if's" or the "this wasn't supposed to happen" come up. And it makes me so sad to think about all the people left behind.

Maybe, just maybe, some miracle will have happened and even just one of them are alive somewhere - even if the chances of that are insanely slim.

It would be a terrorist attack, not a terrorist hijacking.

If it had been a terrorist attack, wouldn't a group of terrorists be bragging about it and taking credit for their glorious work?

Not around so much now that school's started

"Live a good life.
If there are gods and they are just,
then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

They've found 17 bodies up to this point, along with a fair amount of wreckage.
