10-year-old copes with rare breast cancer. - June 3rd 2009, 03:54 PM

link
A 10-year-old Southern California girl with an extremely rare, adult form of breast cancer says she's sad that her hair is gone but she's trying to remain brave. Hannah Powell-Auslam, of La Mirada was interviewed Wednesday on ABC's " Good Morning, America ." She was shown getting her hair shaved off rather than waiting for chemotherapy to make it fall out. Her family also got buzz cuts. The fifth-grader complained of itching in April. Her mother discovered a lump, and that led to a diagnosis of breast cancer. Hannah has had a mastectomy. Hannah says she tries to find a bright side to things as she battles her illness and the side effects of chemotherapy. She says she's still a kid even though she's fighting an adult disease.

Never knew kids could get breast cancer.

Aw This is so sad. I really feel sorry for the girl. While no one should get cancer, I think it's harder when you're younger and really have no conception of the world. Plus when you're 10, it's a lot harder for you body to fight it.

As rare as it is, you don't hear about other children battling devestating diseases. The only outcome I see of this is to remind people that children can get ill, which is something most people know.

That's awful. Poor kid. I betcha she'll push through though. Children usually have a much higher survival rate when battling diseases like cancer.

that's not actually true, it's in fact better to get cancer when you're younger as you're body fights it much better and copes with chemotherapy better than an older person would.

anyways, as for this girl.. that's really sad :[ someone that age shouldn't have to have a mastecomy, it just breaks my heart. i was opposite a girl on the ward a few months ago who has ovarian cancer i think it was and had to have a hysterectomy, she was only 13. i was almost in tears when she was telling me about it. i agree with the headshaving though, as soon as my hair started falling out i shaved it all off because i wanted to have control over cancer and not let it have control over me. nice of her family to shave their heads too, a few of my friends did that.

..and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears..

Oh no....a mastectomy at ten? That's so sad. :c I hope the girl pulls through, I bet she will.

This is actually disturbing...I never knew it was possible to develop breast cancer so early. :\ *shiver*

I hope she pulls through. To have such a life changing illness at such a young age is exceptionally horrid.
