Is there life on other planets? - June 7th 2009, 08:14 PM

I was just wondering whether or not other people believe there is life on other planets.

Personally, I think someone would have to be very self-centered to think that with all of the other galaxies out there, only our little planet could produce sentient beings.

What's your opinion?

Not necessarilly.

There could be a civilization out there thats FAR more advanced than us. Technologically and mentally.

Now, if you were them, would you really want to contact us?

It'd be like looking at an anthill. You see them, are amused, but want nothing to do with them. You also don't want to be part of their world, nor do you want to teach them anything. Well, you CAN'T teach them anything...

Yeah I know this is far-fetched. But just throwing something out there.

If you find any form of life, you should want to interact with it ...so in theory, mabey these 'higher' creatures arent as smart as they could be, by not interacting with us

Why interact with it?

...I'm quite fine observing the anthills from here. No need to interact with the ants.

I think the most they would do is observe us for that chance of learning something new, but nothing more. Interacting with us could have some unintended drastic consequences on our society, especially if they are that much more advanced. Maybe they see it fit to just leave us be? Who knows.

Here's my theory.

There are other forms of sentient life, and they have been here.

Problem is, they took one look at us and said, "Wow, these creatures are fucking crazy!", and went home.

As a civilization, I don't think we're ready for interstellar contact.

Often I lie wide awake, thinking of things I could make.
But I don’t seem to have the parts to build them.
I am so scared of what will kill me in the end, for I am not prepared.
I hope I will get the chance to be someone, to be human.

Lol, don't you think thats a little arrogant? what makes you think that if they were so advanced that they'd care a bit about our own little blue planet, full of "intelligent" life that kills each other and destroys its home?

Have any of you seen the relatively new movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still"? I think that movie clearly answers the question "why would they not contact us?" Humans generally view things they don't understand as dangerous. We become fearful and that makes us irrational.

Also a possibility is that they communicate or exist on a completely different level than us, and don't have the capability to contact us (or the scientific resources).

Plus, interacting with an alien species could cause unknown issues. Or like in hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy, they would want to biuld a highway and out planet would be in the way, and we would be demolished >_<

I would love to think there are civilizations on other planets/ galaxies.
I cannot imagine how incredibly boring it would be to be the only civilization.

uninterrupted human expansion is a terrible thought. (then again I bet there are worse races than us)

I believe there are civilizations both more advanced and less advanced than us.

I'm certain there is bacteria and other single celled organisms out there. Whether they have proceeded to evolve into something greater... I certainly hope so, it would make life interesting for the rest of us.

It's hard for me to imagine our planet is the only one that is host to life.
