I actually like this idea. It'll create a sense of accountability.

Plus, you really don't need that box of armor piercing rounds shipping to you from out of state, do you?

What could you possibly need a machine gun for that doesn't involve robbing a bank or being in the army?

Good! I'm glad to see any kind of movement like this, even though it's only a first step on a long road. Kudos to Schwarzenegger.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

I actually think it's a really good idea. As long as the gun restrictions don't apply to historical bullets/cannon balls and guns like Civil War Era), I don't have a problem with it. The only guns I like are the ones I can examine for their historical value, otherwise they seem dangerous and pointless to me. Besides, this is California we are talking about. If it was in the South, I could see why there might be fuss. But not in California.

I had my doubts about Arnie when he got into office but his continuous stream of reasonable and sensible decisions make me respect him quite a lot.

Can anyone against this decision actually give me a reasonable argument against it other than "LAWL GUNS ARE FUN!!11"? Which is a pretty silly argument as he's not out-lawing guns anyway...this is about ammo so it doesn't effect the sale of guns themselves so it wont effect collectors at all.

These laws are not even the slightest bit ridiculous compared to those in Australia. In Victoria, Australia, you're required to take a safety firearms license test as well as wait 5 weeks before they even consider looking at your firearms application. To get a pistol license, all pistols purchased must be kept at a gun club that you are a member of before getting your license and any removal of your pistol from the club will result in a misdemeanor and loss of firearms+license.

I don't have my firearms license yet - I sent it in two months ago along with 180 points of Identification, registration of currently owned firearms, safety firearms certificate, gun club membership forms, game hunting license, rifle range membership and a referal from a Federal officer I've known for over three years. I mean, come on? Forcing gun store owners to put ammunition behind a counter? Big deal! That's nothing...

Not to mention, over here, semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and fully automatic rifles and shotguns are illegal aswell. Burst-fire and fully-automatic pistols are illegal aswell. There are restrictions - all firearms MUST be bolt-action or have some sort of hand-cocking after each round is discharged. Silencers and noise supressors are ILLEGAL. I mean, come on! And... you need a firearms license for an air rifle/BB gun.

Every gun in your household must be kept in a gun safe under lock and key, with ammunition in a seperate place under lock and key aswell. Your gun safe must be bolted down to the ground and ammunition keys kept on a seperate set of keys to your gun safe's.

Yeah, I don't think California has anything to worry about with a thumb scanner and over-the-counter ammunition. I believe the main reason is to stop gangland violence anyhow. They're doing a world of good.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

I agree Australia's got some pretty insane gun laws (you're not allowed to have anything that might be confused with a gun?) but I like the laws over here. You're allowed to have a gun, but you need a reason (farming, hunting etc.) and a licence. If you want to collect guns then you have to buy deactivated, and if you want to shoot guns as a sport then you must wither use gun-club owned firearms or your own guns (of course the type of gun is heavily restricted).
