Danone's Actimel ad misleading, says UK watchdog - October 14th 2009, 07:00 PM

Danone's Actimel ad misleading, says UK watchdog
Britain's advert watchdog has told dairy group Danone to pull a new television ad for its Actimel probiotic drink because the health claims made are misleading for consumers.

The advert wrongly implied that Danone's popular Actimel product could help prevent children from catching bacterial infections, said the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), upholding complaints from five viewers...
Finally! I've been waiting years for this!

I just never believe what I see on adverts so I don't have an issue with it.

Totally, all adverts are misleading. I am really not surprised.

Most ads are misleading anyway. As long as you don't lie, you can say anything you want. You really have to think about how certain statements may have been manipulated. For example, we've all seen car commercials that claim this car was first in its class, right? It doesn't give you any specifics. Maybe it was the only car in the class. Also watch out for the words "could" or "may". "It's been proven that this product could increase your energy by up to 50%!" Sure, it COULD. That doesn't mean there isn't an incredibly small chance of it.

Unless you have a product that is perfect... They will always have to portray it in some light, or give it some sort of spin... To be honest its all down to interpretation I think , and the job of the people who make the advert to create a false image of a product... Because very very rarely is it correct!

It's like the McDonalds advert which claimed that their burgers were "100% real beef" which really just meant that they bought all their burgers from a company called "Real Beef".

I'm so glad someone FINALLY called Actimel out on this though. I've been waiting for that for ages.

I used to drink actimel, not cause of the supposed benefits though...but yeah, the majority of adverts out there are misleading. I am really waiting for someone to put a ban on those horrible anti-wrinkle ones though - why oh why are the girls advertising it always like 30 or below? It makes no sense!

No my favourite ones are those before + after pictures that use two completely different people for the photos (unless that is weight loss really does change the way you look )

I feel I have to reply to this just to say that it's nice to see something in Current Events and Debates that doesn't make me lose hope in humanity....

What about mascara adverts when they get the model to wear fake lashes though?
