2010 California Protection of Marriage Act - October 19th 2009, 02:39 AM

Quote:
The 2010 California Marriage Protection Act is a piece of proposed legislation that would ban divorce in the state of California, stating "No party to any marriage shall be restored to the state of an unmarried person during the lifetime of the other party."

The bill was introduced in September of 2009 by John Marcotte, who describes himself as "a firm believer in traditional family values. He currently opposes gay marriage, Obama talking to children and MSNBC's entire prime-time line-up."

Here is a video

Do you think about this? Do you think this act will pass?

Brave move, and to be honest I think its a good one... But I don't think it'll pass, too many people divorce nowadays... But then I guess an act like this is to stop that :|

It'd never pass in a million years and is frankly ridiculous on it's own merits too.

I guess it's nice that he's standing up for what he believes though, even if it is crazy.

A couple at my church got married or something and were told after they weren't legally married or something because on the paperwork they crossed out the a and b and put groom and bride or something. I think they were the start of the new paperwork... I don't know too much about it.

Re: 2010 California Protection of Marriage Act - October 19th 2009, 03:03 AM

that is an obscene law. I dont agree with divorce unless as a very last resort, or in special circumstances (e.g. reoccuring domestic violence), but I dont think you should make a law to prevent it. I dont see how making it illegal solves the problem. I mean, there's clearly more then its legality that causes such high divorce rates. Women have been able to divorce their husbands a fairly long time, and vice versa. But the rates are higher then ever. You need to work on the cause, otherwise it'd be unsuccessful. Making two people stay married when they really cant stand each other, or dont want to be, is not going to maintain married values. Affairs are not illegal, and you don't have to live with each other. Potentially, marriage values could be even more harmed by not allowing divorces. Particularly if you believe love is an important part of marriage.

Here's a quote from the website:

Quote:
"Sometimes other people need to sacrifice in order to protect my ideas about traditional marriage."
Excuse me? No.

That's absurd! The high divorce rate is something that needs to be dealt with, but this is certainly not the way to do that. Even if this law passed (which it won't), people would still get divorced in the sense that they'd separate and start seeing other people. You can't force people to stay together.

I personaly don't believe in divorce. Marriage is suppose to be for better or worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health. Unfortunately marriage isn't taken seriously these days. People change, life changes.
But from my own experience I wouldn't want strangers deciding whats better for my family in terms of if my parents could or could not get divorced. Only you can decide that and not a bunch of strangers.

While I agree that divorce is too common and marriage taken too frivolously in our culture, this bill is not a step in the right direction. It's several thousand steps too many in the general direction of something that might approximate a good idea.

Additionally, that video wins so hard.

FTR, if my parents never got divorced, my dad probably would have turned into an alcoholic and my mom would be a miserable wreck. Thank goodness for divorce!

This is stupid.Divorce happens, it's part of life.

In my mind, it should not be 'for better or worse, death do us part'. Love doesn't always last that long, it's really rare. I prefer 'as long as love lasts'. It's much more practical. And no, I do not think this will pass.

I can't see this passing. It's rather absurd really, divorce is something that was illegal centuries ago. What good is stopping two people who are in a miserable and loveless relationship from moving on and finding a better partner? This is out-dated and ridiculous.

And it says "As long as the other party is living." I can see a lot of marriages which would otherwise end in divorce, ending in murder (or even suicide) instead. What if you were in a relationship which was abusive? But you were stuck to the person who was abusing you? Eventually, something drastic would happen.

Perhaps the intentions were good, but it's still a very bad idea.

If they want to cut down on divorce rates, they should try to keep people from marrying on a whim while they are drunk in Vegas...

I hope this never passes. Can you imagine the shit that would come up? I know some people are against divorce, but that doesn't mean they can ban it.

Yet another case of using a cleaver instead of diagnosing the problem. If Marcotte is so concerned about the divorce rate he should focus on fixing issues that lead to divorce. Simply banning it will do diddlysquat.

I'm in the "If my parents hadn't divorced HOOBOY life would be nuts" boat.

To be honest, all this IS going to promote is not getting married, yeah a piece of paper and a few signatures may say they're legally together, but they don't have to be together ... Its just going to be full of divorce wannabes... Who have girlfriends/ boyfriends lol, because they cant remarry after their first failed lol

I think that it's a ridiculous idea. The divorce rate is high and that sucks, but if people don't want to be together anymore, I think that it's their business. They shouldn't be forced to follow someone else's family values.
