Re: Firefighter suspended for refusing to remove american flag sticker off locker - October 19th 2009, 05:01 PM

I would be mad if they made me take off my flag. I can see how the other stickers of racist things are taken off, but the flag?

I'm surprised I haven't been told I'm offensive at work because I speak English... this is getting really ridiculous.

Now, I understand the idea behind the policy, and I would view it differently if they just didn't want stickers on there because, say, they were too hard to clean off. This is kind of like the zero tolerance issue w/ the cub/boy scout recently, who had the camping tool and was expelled because of it. I hope it ends up similarly to that case.

Americans get offended too easily.

It's stupid he's not allowed to have an American flag sticker, but it's also stupid to not listen to his boss over a sticker.

I understand why he'd be bothered by it, but if it's a company policy against ALL stickers, then they have to uphold it for ALL stickers.

They even told him it has nothing to do with the flag being offensive, so I think he's overdoing this a bit. He was probably suspended for insubordination more than the actual flag, or at least that's what I'd think. I doubt they genuinely suspended him JUST because he had the flag. It was probably more the fact he turned down a direct order.

I can see both sides of the story, but like Steph said, in the end rules are rules and you've got to obey them. Its just the way it goes.
If they let this one thing pass how long is it before anything goes kinda thing? (I know thats a huge exaggeration but you get the idea)

Not that flexible, sorry.

What really gets my goat is how anything that could even be tangentially related to an attack on the American flag is blown up and advertized in the most biased way possible.

Can't think of anything witty to say here.

This is just plain wrong, and I can't see any logical argument for why this man can't have an American flag sticker on his locker.

Completely ridiculous.

Because there aren't supposed to be any stickers on lockers, flags or otherwise. Doy.

And anyone who doesn't listen to their boss can kiss their job goodbye! There is really no reason for him to show his patriotism at work. If he wants he can go home and put American Flag stickers all over his house, and sing the national anthem from his front yard. I see no reason why people deserve the right to have flag stickers at work. It's up to the boss!

If there were no stickers allowed AT ALL, you'd be right. But..

It says "all stickers and statements -- union, cartoon and political."
Stickers are allowed, but it seems like not certain ones.

I wouldn't say the American flag fits either of those categories. He's just a man who loves his country.

Does your boss have the right to have you salute to a portrait of Adolf Hitler?

I read that as no stickers statements at all, and the last after just a style of rhetoric. I agree it's somewhat ambiguous, but from the fact that he was asked to remove the sticker - and a pretty tiny one at line - I'd generally infer that it means all.

Sure he does. He'll probably become unemployed/out of business fairly quickly, if he doesn't get charged with offensive behavior or whatever first, but he can.

If it's applicable to my job description, yes.
