Swine Flu (Possible Pandemic) - October 20th 2009, 09:10 PM

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/nat...,2336680.story

Basically, most critical patients are pretty much labeled as do not save. I think this is just horrible. As far as I know this is just Florida and has not been approved yet

"The list of conditions that disqualify hospital admission would be applied to most people only in the two most severe levels of a pandemic. However, they would also be applied in the first level ofa pandemic for patients transferred to hospitals from "other institutional facilities," such as nursing homes and mental health facilities."

so basically anyone in mental health facilities get "let go" before "healthy" people?

"Utah family physician Pete DeWeerd had to tell a mock patient's mother that her 7-year-old daughter, who had cerebral palsy and was suffering from the flu, would be turned away from the hospital and likely die."
That is likely to be what happens if this is put in place.

What are your thoughts on this policy?
and as a side question, once you get swine flu can you get it again? (like if you got it over the summer this past year..summer 2009 or if you get it now)

Oh this is ridiculous. There is not going to be a pandemic. They're just fear mongering so you'll go out and spend money on the vaccine.

All I can think about when people panic about Swine Flu is "Holy shit people are gullible..." It makes me mad though that people are letting swine flu get in the way of actual medical problems.

Have you gotten sick recently? There's a good chance you had Swine flu. It's passed around very easily but it is not dangerous. The seasonal flu kills more people and less people contract the seasonal flu.

Also, I believe the policy that article is about is the case of an actual pandemic, not swine flu.

The article is stating that in the case of a swine flu pandemic in the state of Florida that they will pretty much choose whose life is worth saving

They do that in every Emergency Room essentially. It's called Triage.

The only people who have died from swine flu are those with underlying health problems. As you would expect of the seasonal flu, hence in the UK vaccines are given to the elderly and the asthmatic.
However I do believe it is a pandemic, see here.
In emergencies you have to choose who you can save, because it is just not possible to save them all. It's a horrible choice to have to make, and I think we shouldn't look down on people for doing this.

Florida health officials are drawing up guidelines that recommend barring patients with incurable cancer, end-stage multiple sclerosis and other conditions from being admitted to hospitals if the state is overwhelmed by flu cases.

The plan, which would guide Florida hospitals on how to ration scarce medical care during a severe flu outbreak, also calls for doctors to remove patients with poor prognoses from ventilators to treat those who have better chances of surviving. That decision would be made by the hospital.
I get it I think

I don't necessarily agree with it, but I think if someone's going to die from a curable flu they'd rather be treating them than people who are going to die anyway, its better 1 living than 2 dying... Its bad they don't have the resources though!

Re: Swine Flu (Possible Pandemic) - October 21st 2009, 05:53 PM

I have H1N1 with an underlying health condition, and frankly, I got off easy. I'm sick, and I've been confined to my bedroom for the past few days, but over-all it could be worse.

Beyond that, this may seem cruel, but it's understandable. I think if there's absolutely no way of saving someone, then it's best to direct resources elsewhere.

Re: Swine Flu (Possible Pandemic) - October 21st 2009, 08:06 PM

But thats the thing, these people ARE curable at least some are. More than likely if I were to get it in a pandemic, I would be turned away. I have active Lyme Disease, swine could make me very sick. If it were between me and someone with no other health conditions, they would win. I understand if they have almost no chance of survival. But not only that but they're saying that not only in just the second and third level of a pandemic, but in the FIRST these rules will apply to people from nursing homes which is a little more understandable than mental health facilities.

Are they saying that mentally ill people aren't worth saving in a pandemic?

Thats not quite how I read it... I think if you had an illness like that, AND got flu, THEN they would take you in, I think its more people with cancer and other bad conditions would be barred from the hospital as their specific diseases are incurable?

Also... Mentally ill people, the flu, messes with your body, but with a mental illness it shouldn't act as an underlying health condition its more people with a ready weakened immune system, for which that is incurable...

As for Lyme disease, I'm not sure... They would still definitely give you flu medicine to fight symptoms and help you through... Or they should!
