It sounds interesting although it lacks some of the back bones and details which would make it very interesting. We discussed something similar to this called the OCD loop (one of the neuological theories for OCD) among other theories and there appears to be some similarities. The problem I see in this study though is that they examined using fMRIs individuals who were already fairly determined about their political beliefs. I would expect that if they got individuals who varied in strengths with their beliefs, then there may be different areas of activation.

With the current study though, it would makes plenty of sense for areas such as the nucleus accumbens and other areas to be activated. This part is something that has been known for quite some time for both drug addictions and "behavioral addictions".
