A chemistry student has been found dead with his jaw blown off by what is believed to be exploding chewing gum, reports have said.

I mean what happened to him was horrible and everything but why didn't he use his common sense or for that matter why didn't anyone around him notice what he was doing and stop him? And why wasn't the teacher paying attention?

I would assume he was doing what teenage guys do. Have you never experimented with making home-made cap bombs or smoke bombs? Sometimes you use household substances, sometimes pick up some potassiuim nitrate. Most of the time it's harmless. Not condoning it of course, but just saying that's probably why he had the stuff.

I think it's pretty stupid how he is a chemisty student yet didn't realise the substance was in fact explosive. You'd think you'd check these things instead of using unknown substances to save things like this really.

But, I guess if they can take his idea and make it so they don't have to chew it for it to exploded, we'd have a ton of 007's in the army.

I actually find this extremely funny. Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for the guy. But as a gum chewer myself, once you are used to to taste of it, you automatically notice if the gum even smells wrong before you start chewing it. Plus doesn't citric acid have a certain smell or colour to it? This doesn't seem like an accident to me.
