Triggering (ED): Dating site for beautiful people expels 'fatties' after holiday weight gain

(CNN) -- A dating site that markets itself as an elite community for beautiful people with a "strict ban on ugly people" has axed about 5,000 members for packing on the pounds during the holiday season.
The international site BeautifulPeople.com threw out members after they posted photos "revealing that they have let themselves go," according to a company statement.
"As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld," said Robert Hintze, founder of BeautifulPeople.com. "Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded."

The company said it "expelled" 1,520 users from the U.S., 832 from the U.K., 533 from Canada, 510 from Poland, 425 from Germany, 402 from Italy, 323 from France, 220 from Denmark, 176 from Turkey and 88 people from Russia.

I don't see what the big deal is. The person admits the site is elitist and so when one signs up for such a site that is all about having people of a certain appearance, if you change your appearance in an undesirable way for the site, then it makes sense you'll get the boot or a warning. It seems pretty logical to me. As for such a site, I find it pretty pointless starting from the entire idea of having a site only of the most beautiful people. According to the article, current members rate newcomers and so, one has to question when you look at just the name of the site, beautifulpeople.com, it's not allowing for an open-ended view of beauty. I mention this because beauty is open-ended but such a site strives to use a strict criteria yet this criteria goes undefined.

Yeah; to be honest the reason websites work,where there are the public involved, the same 'type' of people join; on here, TH we have possibly a few anomalies, but lots of us all have a fair bit in common with a fair few people on this site. And that goes for lots of websites including beautiful people... The sort of people who think the ideas awesome will join, and if accepted good for them (Y).

As for removing people who piled on the pounds over Christmas, you join that website you've got to conform to it and its rules to stay

I wouldn't actually be suprised if they are making this up to give people this view 'oh, its strictly enforced, they must have beautiful people'. Because I mean, come on, if you were on that site, and had a noticable change in weight, you wouldnt post pictures showing that. Also, the type of people probably accepted on there in the first place are unlikely to put that much weight on, even over Christmas. So yeah, maybe just an attempt of publicity?

I think that the website is kind of hilarious concept, I must say. Anyone who feels the need to be on a website like that to feel beautiful maybe...needs to spend some quality time outside away from the internet or something. And I agree with Tegan - I'm seriously doubting people would post pictures even hinting at possible holiday weight gain in front of such judgmental people.

That's just ridiculous, it's beyond a joke. It's hardly going to help body image and self confidence, is it? I agree with Tegan, I feel that it's going to increase the need for people to lose weight to be 'beautiful', rather than being happy in their own skin. It sounds like a very judgemental community and I highly doubt any good will come of it. What's the point in the website in the first place? How is it going to be beneficial to anybody? I understand that it's a dating site but how many of these 'dates' are actually successful in the long term?

that's a good point - surely people would know if they've piled on the pounds and therefore wouldn't be too keen to post pictures up on this site, that they know is so strict about not having 'fatties.'

I mean, internet dating is hard enough as it is, sabotaging yourself by signing up to a site full of people like that? Well, their choice. Not one I'd make. I find this hilarously funny. It wasn't even the site rules, the users who got kicked off had complaints made on them by other users, who didn't think they were beautiful enough. It really does make me laugh, but I doubt they are all shallow.

Hahaha, this made me laugh hysterically! The really funny thing is that the guy shown on the homepage isn't even that attractive? It really makes me mad, though, that so many people have decided that people who are overweight cannot be pretty. I know a lot of people who are overweight, and who are gorgeous all the same. Not to mention, I've heard that a lot of people are attracted to people a bit on the larger side. Whoever decided that being larger meant you weren't beautiful seriously needs help.

It's a ridiculous website to begin with. The guy can do what he wants with his site, yes, but nobody else can do anything about it. He's got a lot of attention for expelling people from the site, smart marketing on his part!

I wish people wouldn't bother with dating sites you have to pay for, there's a couple of free ones that are decent enough, don't waste your money looking for people who think they are beautiful, on the outside. Beauty is inside and out, anyone should be accepted into that site, really. It's ridiculous, I frown upon it and hope people get annoyed and leave when their subscription is up, or cancel their accounts.

I think they should limit the number of members to these paid sites though, people shouldn't be able to get rich from these 'exclusive; dating sites. Go and do something useful whilst you're on this planet! [/rant] Ha..

I agree with you 100%. I also think that a good that a good few of these people probably joined the website simply to get an opinion on how beautiful they really are. That makes me angry too, because we live in such a shallow and ridiculous world that people who are on the larger side can't feel good about themselves unless others tell them they are beautiful. I, for one, don't think anyone should be relying on dating websites to tell them whether or not they are attractive. They should be confident in themselves, despite what idiots like those on this website have to say about them.

Think of it this way - there is definitely one LESS dating web site I'll ever do a search for a future loved one on!!

A few years ago - in Vancouver B.C. - a local newspaper was being pressured [By a small group of people] to reject any ad submissions for their 'personals column' that used the phrase 'no fatties or fems'. Not sure if they got their wish - but I argued against such a ban for a couple of reasons. 1. It's an affront to 'free speech' and 2. Isn't it better to know right away what sort of person you're dealing with? I think so. Wouldn't you hate to meet them - and THEN be rejected because you're what THEY consider to be a 'fattie or fem'?

The one thing that makes me laugh about that 'Dating site for beautiful people' is the fact that to join - you must think of yourself as 'beautiful'.

WHAT KIND OF PERSON THINKS OF THEM SELF AS BEAUTIFUL?! YIKES!! That 's like thinking of yourself as 'wonderful'!! lol

I remember reading several articles in my local paper about this website. Some people go to extensive measures just to be accepted in(ex. one article they interviewed someone who got plastic surgery, stomach stapling, etc. just to get on it). Sad, though really, people can do whatever they want. I'm not going to try to stop them or shut down the site.

I think that the site in and of itself is ridiculous however the thing is the site has 'an image to maintain' so of course they are going to kick anyone out that does not fit that image. So, in reality what the site did really wasn't that bad. I mean, I think it is don't get me wrong, but it is called beautifulpeople.com so it is only going to want people that it feels are beautiful. This should not be a cut to anyone but the people who joined the site.

I don't see a problem with the site.
There was a market for such a product. A person went out and built a website (product) to fulfill demand and voila supply and demand at its best.

I have never seen the site advertised in any ads so they are not going out of their way to insult my/our looks so the only people getting shafted are those that look for it.

The site also works on "majority rules" so it's opinion based (a lot like the one you're on now).
There were clearly terms and conditions that members didn't adhere to so they got cut.

It's a service that people want, much like dating sites for the rich and successful, and the people who would want to use such a service shouldn't be denied the right to do so.
