10 Hours school on a saturday cause of snow? - January 9th 2010, 09:47 PM

Hey.
So im not sure if this is the right place for this.

Anyhow, on the radio earlier on today, it said schools may be opening on a saturday in the near future, to allow the students to catch up on the work they have missed out because of all the snow.

I mean, im not a person who doesnt like school, but i like my saturdays too. I dont like this idea, and i hope it doesnt happen.

What do you guys think?

Loves <3

Hah, fat chance of this happening, pupils wouldn't turn up.
It's a stupid idea to be honest, the snow isn't even that bad really, Britain is being extremely over dramatic about the whole thing.

That is no help to me now anyway.
My exams are all next week so it will be too late to catch up on anything missed because I will have already done the exams. (That is if my school even opens to let me take the exams)

I don't see that happening. If anything, they'll just take the few extra days off of the next break. At least, that's what I think they'll be doing here.

I think it's a good idea for people in GCSE and A Level years because obviously they need to concentrate on their work. I don't think it matter so much for the younger years.

My school already opens in the half term holidays in order for GCSE and A Level students to catch up on coursework and stuff but it's not compulsory.

I don't see it happening either. My school might open and if we cant attend we have to do the resit which I think is unfair because you get one chance instead of two and a slight advantage to those who can walk..

I think it sounds like a good idea if the students missed a lot of school, as much of an inconvenience as it may be. Many students may not turn up but there's not a whole lot the school can do about that. We had some final exams on a Saturday and it was a pain to schedule how to get there as I live about a 25-30 mins drive away, bit longer depending on if the train is late and traffic.

As much as it sounds like a good idea for all the students taking exams I doubt many would turn up. I know myself there's no way I would.

Good idea in theory, won't work in practice.

But you know I don't actually think this was the news story, I heard the same item I think but it was about 10 hour school days being piloted in lower income areas, where there is a greater mix of core subjects and enrichment. Apparently a similar trial in America raised the % of students going onto University from 10% to 80% !

Thats what I thought; and then I went to work yesterday lots of roads round me are being closed because they're becoming impassable, and in fact the main road; the ONLY way to where I live (I think is about 20,000 people?) the road wasn't visible, you could see a few feet in front of you and cars were sliding all over the place... And it just keeps snowing :@

As for school on a Saturday; I doubt it, people have other commitments to be getting on with, maybe they'll make it optional? But then teachers will need extra wages, can't see it happening to be honest Unless it gets even worse xD

How can one love themselves, when they love absolutely nothing?
Do something that is interesting. If it is not interesting, find out why it is not interesting.

This can't be mandatory for Jews and some Christians.

I do my part: during winter I drive a 97 GMC 4x4 that does about 15mpg, what are you doing to warm up your country?

I live in California.
I don't have snow.
I think it a wonderful idea. They need to make it up.

my brothers school has compulsory saturday school, but then again it is a boarding school and it's pretty much standard to have saturday school at most boarding schools.

i'd be all for it - i need to catch up on loads of stuff. although i don't see how they could make it compulsory, but if it was optional i'd definitely go.

This wouldn't happen to my school anyway, because we did use to have Saturday school and the teachers are still complaining about it

A friend of mine suggested they might just skip the February mid-term, since it doesn't actually have a bank-holiday. Scary.

But ultimately if this is your final year and you need to be in school to study, then an extra week of study in January isn't going to offset the fact you can't study out of school coming up to the exams.

I said this to some of my friends too and they said they would just stay off for February half term anyway. In my school the teachers wouldn't be happy about that and would probably stay off then too because they are really lazy. A lot of them could have easily got to school during the snow but just couldn't be bothered.

I know a lot of people are complaining that they haven't had any revision because we have been off school but I don't think that is a good enough excuse.
I have spent this week doing work at home and on Friday me and a group of friends all went to the library and had a revision session for the full day. There is nothing stopping people doing work at home.
The only little problem I have had is I haven't been able to contact teachers with questions and have had to try to find out things from the internet or friends which hasn't helped much.

Anyway going in for February half term to make up for things I have missed will not help me because my last exam is the 25th of Jan and the work that I have missed is for these exams.

If we went in during February half term we would be doing work for the summer exams and I haven't lost any school time on the summer exams.

^ I have. Especially in Chem and Bio we stopped doing work for the Jan exams in the beginning of November so all the work I've missed has been for June exams.

Hey, we don't have that much snow, but we're the only house in the estate that still has water. That's bad.

I wondered if everyone was just being a bit melo-dramatic about the snow considering..you guys are used to..rain .

Honestly, that's not a good idea. School on Saturday? Ten hours of it? Really?

Over here we're allowed three snowdays, and then they begin to add on days to the end of the year - delays and early closings are still considered full days.

This is the year that I don't care how many snowdays we get because I'm still graduating the same day regardless. Of course we haven't had any yet
