Kraft takeover of cadburys - January 20th 2010, 05:17 PM

As the title implies American food giant 'Kraft' has taken over Englands 'Cadburys'.

I refuse to eat Cadbury's from now on, I really didn't want it to be sold. Bye bye Creme Eggs

Cadbury's is a British chocolate company so it should be owned by British people. I am not happy about this at all.

Cadbury takeover raises doubts over Kraft's business ethics

Cadbury's launch of Fairtrade Dairy Milk Chocolate Bar tripled the amount of fairly traded, cocoa sold by Ghana to 15,000 tonnes.
Kraft's proposed takeover of Cadbury has raised widespread fears that the US food group will abandon a landmark deal by the British confectioner to buy only Fairtrade cocoa beans for its Dairy Milk brand.
The Fairtrade Foundation has begun urgent talks with Cadbury's executives to see if the company's agreement to buy all its cocoa beans for Dairy Milk direct from the foundation's farmer-led co-operatives will continue after the takeover.
Kraft is widely seen amongst development campaigners as being hostile to the Fairtrade Foundation in particular after it criticised the movement for only dealing with "an extremely small number" of companies, claiming it was too small scale for its needs.
Kraft insists it supports the principle of sustainability after signing up with the Rainforest Alliance, which promotes conservation and fair business dealings with small growers, to supply some coffee beans for its Kenco and other brands. But Oxfam has accused Kraft of undermining attempts to treat small farmers fairly, defending the fairtrade scheme as "the only system that guarantees farmers a price that allows them a good return [whilst] at the same time working towards a sustainable future."
Source
Who cares about the taste of the chocolate etc, that may change, but what about the people who are paid to harvest the chocolate? =/ I hope it remains Fairtrade, that's a huge move, I'm surprise it wasn't more widespread on the news.
I saw a couple of documentaries on the Cabury farmers in Africa before fairtrade was mentioned by any of the big chocolate companies, the workers are treated like slaves and the farm owners make millions. It's important they keep it Fair-trade.

I care a lot about fair trade food and was really pleased when the fair trade bar came out

however I also care about the taste. if it starts tasting like American chocolate does... well that will be disasterous, American chocolate does not taste like real chocolate

Kinda like Land Rover, Aston Martin, Jaguar, and MINI?
I doubt the purchasing of the company is going to make a (taste) difference . Kraft probably just wants the profit.

What's wrong with American chocolate? I like Cadburys too, and I prefer fair trade food, but honestly, does it make a difference who owns it, as long as they don't change the product?

There is very little difference:

The levels of salt in food UK vs US are higher in the US for most things, Canada even higher. There's less fat in the US bar and more sugar, I would have thought that would make it taste better, apparently not.
It's unlikely they will change the product, seeing the fuss it's kicked up in the media, if they have any business sense they will keep the ingredients the same as they are now, it's hardly worth worrying about. Although, if they lost a few customers in the UK they need not worry, Cadbury is the #1 seller in Austrailia and India, that's a big customer base as it is.

Although, the point I raised earlier is being missed. It seems most don't care about the cocoa harvesters and their wage?

It doesn't affect me, as I never buy Cadbury's anyway, but I really hope that it remains fair trade, as many cocoa harvesters live in appauling conditions, and recieve wages that are next to nothing.

I cannot stand most American chocolate, costing under 3 dollars a bar that is
As long as they don't change the taste, I'm good.
But now I really want Cadbury eggs.

I'm not sure I'd like Kraft chocolate. I don't even think they have Kraft chocolate in America?
I don't really see how American Chocolate is different than the chocolate in England, especially since they even sell Cadburys here.

In the US Kraft owns Oreo cookies.

In the UK and US Terry's Chocolate is owned by Kraft (Terry's Chocolate Orange etc) and Toblerone is also owned by Kraft.

It's not going to make any difference with Cadbury's either.

I am definitely not a fan of large corporations getting even larger. If Kraft changes Cadbury to fair trade though, the take-over won´t bother me as much. It is something that could change a lot of lives.

This is solemn news. I loved Cadbury Creme Eggs...now, they will never be the same.

A lot of British jobs may now be moving to America. Just what we need in a time of such economic security.

7,000 workers in Britain and Ireland.
Out of "28.92 Million people in employment in the UK. That number fell by 14,000 on the quarter."
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/lmsuk0110.pdf

It's not going to make much difference to the economy if it falls at the same rate. Jobs will stay in the UK, Kraft plan to keep factories in the UK and $1.8 billion has been pledged for the factory in Bristol. That's $1.8bn that wouldn't have been spent by Cadbury had it not been taken over, that in itself is a bit of a stimulus package, wouldn't you agree?

Inflation hit 2.9% in December 2009, caused by oil price volatility and changes in value added tax. If it continues to remain positive for a couple of months, the country will put out of the 18-month recession. Canada has been out of a recession since July 2009 according to the bank of Canada, Economists argue since September/October. The US is going to benefit from it's exports with a strong Canadian dollar. The world bank expects the US economy to grow 2.5% this year and the global economy to grow 2.7% this year. This is no longer a recession, we're no longer in the downturn, this is the start of a slow recovery having entered the base of the upturn. The term recession is only relevant to past tense now! Yay!

I think I'm the only person who doesn't like Cadbury's chocolate very much. I like Nestle I quite like American chocolate (the ones I've tasted anyway) so I'm not too bothered.
