Girl arrested for doodling on desk - February 21st 2010, 08:27 AM

Hi Everyone!!

I hope you're having a super fine day.

(CNN) -- There was no profanity, no hate. Just the words, "I love my friends Abby and Faith. Lex was here 2/1/10" scrawled on the classroom desk with a green marker.

Alexa Gonzalez, an outgoing 12-year-old who likes to dance and draw, expected a lecture or maybe detention for her doodles earlier this month. Instead, the principal of the Junior High School in Forest Hills, New York, called police, and the seventh-grader was taken across the street to the police precinct.

Alexa's hands were cuffed behind her back, and tears gushed as she was escorted from school in front of teachers and -- the worst audience of all for a preadolescent girl -- her classmates.

"They put the handcuffs on me, and I couldn't believe it," Alexa recalled. "I didn't want them to see me being handcuffed, thinking I'm a bad person."

Click on THIS to read the rest of the story.

A 'teacher' responded to the article arguing in favour of what happened.

What you're about to read was my response to that teacher. [I was kinda irked - as you will see]

Like most bone-headed teachers - you have no clue as to what is 'reasonable'. Shame on you. If 'respect' is your goal - than be worthy of respect. "It may seem extreme..." Oh really? It seems extreme [Having the girl arrested] because it IS extreme. The one sure way to lose anyone's respect is to be UNREASONABLE. And kids - perhaps even more than adults - instinctively know when something [Or someone] is unreasonable. Sadly - for your sake - most of us have years of experience dealing with [i.e. coping with] teachers. We KNOW that a good teacher is a rare teacher. Most people - so it seems - become teachers because they like the idea of 'summer off'.

Should the girl have been punished in some way? SURE! Cleaning her desk - to start with. And perhaps a 'detention'. Plus calling her parents. But that's it.

What do YOU think of all of this?!

GREAT BIG HUG
Craig!!

That is a way too extreme punishment for something as minor as doodling on a desk. The amount of kids that doodle on the desks at school out of boredom, the most you'd really expect was to have to clean it off and maybe a detention but being arrested for it? It's not like she wrote something really horrible on the desk either or did something completely outrageous.

Sure, she should have been reprimanded for vandalising the school property, but I'm sure they could've thought of less extreme ways of punishing her.

lolwut? that's pathetic :/ My maths/form teacher caught me drawing on the desk once and he just kept me after class and basically said don't do it again and made me wipe it (which took about a minute as it was pencil)

I guess no one else in that school will do it again. But at that age, its not fair. Girls at that age just aren't tough enough for that. I imagine the teacher has to argue in favour of her boss. And I imagine the head who called the police was just at the end of his tether one way or another. Makes you wonder what the other school rules are though. Kids shouldn't have to spend the majority of their day in such a strict area.

Oh man... the worst that happens is something like "YOU, Pay attention and stop doodling" and then the teacher after class will wipe it off if another classmate cares enough to tell him/her about it.

This is absolutely horrible because it doesn't simply show the other students not to doodle, it gives her a criminal record at such a young age. Supposing she wrote swear words on the desk, arresting her then would still be over the top. If I were the teacher, I'd give her one detention and have her wipe off the desk. I wouldn't bother involving the parents for something that minor. If she wrote racist or hateful comments or carved any message into the desk, then I'd be willing to involve the parents but still no arrest.

In a school this strict, I cant imagine what farting in a class would get you. Perhaps a week worth of detentions?

I wouldn't even give her a proper detention :/ I'd probably do what my teacher did, make me wipe it off and say don't do it again.

At my high school, if we doodled we would just get time after class to clean the desk. Nothing bad. I think that arresting the girl, is going to far.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE THESE DAYS?????

You don't arrest a 12 yr old for writing on a desk. That could be easily considered unconstitutional and I would be angry if that was my kid.

Wow. That is NOT right. She's only 12, she should not be arrested, first of all, but for just doodling on a desk? That's crazy. At my school, I don't go to one class without seeing writing on my desk. And not to mention a lot of the time, it's profanity. This girl didn't write anything terrible or profane, and a punishment as great as the one she received was not necessary.

Definitely not right at all. The teacher, the police, and the policy: all awful.

The one time the teacher tries to properly enforce a rule and everyone moans... what's happening to this world.

If the rule and the enforcement are both improper, why shouldn't people moan?

As true as that may be, the scenarios are different when the punishment is proper but the person just doesn't want to be punished versus a clearly improper punishment and the person complains because of how it is improper.

I wounder what the punishment for the graffiti on the wall is like. Death? How stupid can you be to really arrest a kid for this? I wonder if it is the school for the mentally retarded, but the principle forgot that the kids are suppose to be retarded, not the teachers.

Jokes aside, the kids should have just had to clean the desk. I wouldn't even say detention for her unless she carved it into the desk and she couldn't clean it out.

Nice to know the tax dollars are working.
Everyone has doodled on their desks at one point or another. They just make you clean it and maybe the boards, but not call the police.

Personally I think that the actions taken against her were not extreme. She was breaking a rule. She shouldn't have broken the rules period. I don't care how old she is. She is twelve. By the time I was that age, I knew better than to write on a desk. She needs to grow up.

^It is true that she should not be writing on the desk, but arresting a 12 year old girl for VERY minor damage to property is extreme overkill and if the parents wanted to they could probably argue this case into the US Supreme Court and win!

Well vandalism is a crime, and it was on government property, this is about setting an example, and I doubt she will do it again.

Anyone a little reminded of V for Vendetta as regards this whole "zero tolerance" thing?

True, she was breaking a rule but is it really necessary to make her have a criminal record for something that petty and harmless when 12 years old? It is vandalism but it takes a minute or so with an eraser to wipe away and besides, what she wrote wasn't offensive or hateful. It's somewhat silly to write stuff like that on a desk but arresting her for it is over the top. It's not uncommon for 12-year olds to do silly things so the school shouldn't be jumping to the police every time a student breaks a rule.

Police should be called in for when they're actually needed, not to arrest a 12-year old girl for doodling on her desk. They have better and more important issues to attend to.

That's the key though, they WERE above the norm. If you were shot for J-Walking and I saw it, I would never J-Walk. It's making her an example to send a message.

Students know it's not allowed so that's not the message it's conveying. Rather, the message is if you break any rule or do any single thing you're not allowed to do, you'll get the harshest legal punishment, including for things that are reversible and no harm was done to anyone. If the students didn't know doodling on desks was not allowed, then fine, carry out this punishment but students do know, they do it anyways because in most places, the punishment is not severe as what they doodled is just silly nonsense.

This is why I gave the previous example of a student bumping into a teacher would be grounds for the student to be charged with assault as opposed to a simple "sorry" or not even that.

Re: Girl arrested for doodling on desk - February 22nd 2010, 06:56 AM

Then I'd like to tar and feather the ones giving the message, don't call me un-patriotic... I'm just living up to the TRUE Americans.

Quote:
At schools across the country, police are being asked to step in. In November, a food fight at a middle school in Chicago, Illinois, resulted in the arrests of 25 children, some as young as 11, according to the Chicago Police Department.
Is there any way I can start a riot? There's more bull shit like this going on now? I'd have been arrested and so would all my friends if we went to high school in these years... wtf is happening to land of the FREE?!

“Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”

So if they don't know it's ok, if they do know, it's not. So under that logic any crime committed by a mentally disabled person should be punished, but not by someone who knew it was against the law to stab someone...

WTF???

serving out tickets for being late to class = unreasonable, no one is hurt what the fuck should the government care?!
serving speeding tickets = reasonable, possibility of hurting someone else

food fight = childhood fun, everyone's been in one - not arrested - today you are, what the fucking hell?! "Joey threw a chip at me!" "CALL THE POLICE! AHHH!!!" WTF? What happened to at least "get the principle"? Last time I checked food isn't lethal and doesn't hurt! Just gets clothes messy and everyone participates, it's like arresting kids for playing war with water balloons!
gang fight = reasonable arrest, hurting someone else

writing on a desk = fucking clean it off, don't arrest the kid!
spray painting a wall = okay, might be merit due to it not being their property

There's extremes and these are fucking extremes and taking away rights of children. If this is the way the US is going - I am fucking prepared for a rebellion, it's natural manure.

What's next arresting a kid for running in the halls?! How the hell can anyone really align themselves with what's going on? Because that's where we're headed. A pink slip turns into a jail fine... that's not America, that's hell. Especially if those levels are raised for all citizens beyond this. And if that's where it goes - across the board - making everything 'merit' for arrest in the US for all people - holy hell I will fight, I'm ready for it. I won't stand by and see this country become the exact OPPOSITE of everything it's meant to be. The founding fathers didn't shed blood for nothing.

That's not what I said at all. If they don't know they're not allowed to do something, then they get punished but not as severely as if they did know it was not allowed. As for the involving someone who was mentally disabled, they may be successful (only about 0.25% or so of the time) to get a NCRMD verdict, in which case, they're still punished but in a different form, thus your example in the real world doesn't apply.
