Yay! Best source of alternative energy, and much safer nowadays.

im all for it the reason there was such a scare is cuz of 1 screwup back in the 70's that had the bad timing of happening right after the china syndrome hit theaters and every1 freaked. i say go nuclear

Solar/Wind/Hydro/Geo > Nuclear > Oil/Coal

I feel that nuclear is a worse option than the standard "clean" energy sources, but until our technology is sufficient to power the globe on those alone (it isn't yet, obviously) nuclear is a better option than pouring more effort into fossil fuels.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

I feel it's a necessary intermediate step to clean energy. Plus it provides exponentially more reliable power than say wind farms. If you refer to europe, France pays Italy to keep their lights on at night so they don't have to shut down the power plants (a freewheeling power plant is a bad thing) just so they can meet the minimum load demand - lot's of power available.

well most of my knowlege of modern nuclear power come from research of nuclear subs and that sort of thing but here a lil piece form that

an La class nuclear sub fuled with a piece of uranium the size of golfball can run for over a year without refueling

I'm against it. The fact that it is non-renewable energy makes it inefficient. What happens when you run out of uranium and other nuclear energies? I would think that one of the reasons we would want to change our energy sources is because we presume that coal and oil are non-renewable resources. If the eventual goal is to shift towards thermal, wind, and hydro as the primary energy sources, why not start now instead of wasting time and resources for nuclear? I guess the biggest concern is reliability of more renewable resources, but if more time is invested into it, the efficiency of the resources is bound to get better.

Weirdly, I've just finished an essay on the treatment of the waste from nuclear power plants.
I'd prefer renewable/'clean' energy sources, but honestly, if the waste is disposed of properly, there is a such a small risk to the environment and people in the surrounding area.
Also, by reprocessing the waste, you can use it again in the reactors, so the same uranium can be used over and over again.

Aye, I be for nuclear power, though it would be better if they switched to fusion and not fission (Unless they've done this? =S)

Fusion is really tricky. I know they're building one in France right now, but if it works, all our problems will be solved.

Re: Nuclear Power: Yay or Nay? - February 25th 2010, 01:38 AM

Interesting, we just had a conversation about this in my Psychology class. Not sure what it has to do with Psychology, but whatever.

I say yay. But, I'm not sure right now we have it perfect. There is the whole "Nuclear Waste" thing going on. (totally didn't read the articles, sorry. I'm going off my own knowledge here so maybe I'm wrong. But I want to put in my 2 cents but don't have the most time )
But, I heard that we are working on converting Nuclear Waste into power as well? Anyone know how far along this research is? If we manage to perfect this as well, then I definatly say yay.

I mean, everyone thinks it's the most dangerous thing in the world but in reality, it's not. Meltdowns are so rare, and when they do happen, there are so many precautions we make so that people don't really get hurt. Did anyone get hurt when there was a meltdown in New York? No.

Not to mention it would open up some jobs, and reduce our dependency on foreign oil which is also not really that clean at all. In any way... Plus, with more money put into it, while it might harm in the short run, I believe it will help in the long run what with jobs and new energy and all that stuff I explained earlier.

Anyways. That's what I think anyway. If we don't perfect converting nuclear waste into power, then I think we should also focus on other methods of clean power. But, that's not the topic of this

Take me seriously.
I dare you.
