Reagan on the $50? - March 4th 2010, 12:39 PM

http://www.aolnews.com/nation/articl...-bill/19381942

Quote:
(March 3) -- Reviving a controversy about which American historical figures deserve to be honored on the nation's currency, a North Carolina congressman is proposing replacing a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant on the $50 bill with one of conservative icon Ronald Reagan.

"President Reagan is indisputably one of the most transformative presidents of the 20th century," Rep. Patrick McHenry, a Republican, said in a letter to his fellow members of Congress. "Like President Roosevelt on the dime and President Kennedy on the half-dollar, President Reagan deserves a place of honor on our nation's currency."
Thoughts?

Here's mine.

I'm not really sure what I think of this. My first instinct is to say that it sounds like a silly idea. I mean, don't they normally wait much longer to put someone on money or something? I don't know, not really my favorite idea ever.

Meh, I'd be ok with it. I couldn't care less as long as I can spend it! Grant wasn't exactly that influential of a president, nor was he a fantastic person. I personally would favor an earlier president though.

I think they should put monuments or places on bills.

I'm not sure about the merits of the idea - it does seem a bit soon after his term and there are a number of other possible nominees for it - but I have to say that Darth Vader picture made my day.

Not Reagan, but definitely get rid of Grant from the $50. He is one of the most corrupt presidents in history...I like the idea of putting Madison on the $50. He wrote some Federalist Papers and whatnot.

General Grant is always treated so unfairly, yes I know he wasn't the best ever, but he did his job and that's all that matters. I'd say no, it's way too soon to put Reagan on any currency.

Reagan is a piece of crap... don't forget the Iran-Contra scandal, selling arms to Iran and importing cocaine into the US, and using the funds from both to fund the contras in Nicaragua.

Who's all for a genocidal drug-dealer on the US $50?

Why not put McDonalds on the $50 bill? I think it's transformed the United States a lot more than any president has.

My thoughts: why the hell are they wasting time on this crap in Washington? Isn't there a health care bill that needs passing and an economy that needs serious life-support?

Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

My vote goes for Bernanke if they wind up having to print larger notes to keep up with the inflation that's undoubtedly about to hit.

Any chance we could get numbers on that prediction?

The inflation? I've no idea exactly, but given the massive monetary stimulus that has taken place, it's inevitable that consumer price rises will come about.
