"Formspring.me" service to reveal identities of anonymous users - March 12th 2010, 12:55 PM

Full article [here]. (not sure if this thread goes here, move if not).

What do you guys think about this?

I think it's pretty crappy of them to do it. If people have asked other people questions under the impression they'll remain anonymous and now their information is going to appear so they won't be anonymous anymore isn't really on especially when it'll be giving a link to their Facebook account and even for people who haven't signed up yet asked questions anyway, I don't think they should be named because they never signed up to the site so they never really agreed to the ToS so why should it happen to them as well?

I feel sorry for the people who have said things thinking they were safe to say it because they were anonymous as I've seen people using them on tumblr to ask people personal questions and receive help, they'll be named now and that really isn't fair on them.

Re: "Formspring.me" service to reveal identities of anonymous users - March 12th 2010, 02:40 PM

While part of me feels it would serve as an amusing comeuppance for people who relied on the anonymity offered to be really abusive or insulting, a) I doubt that was the behaviour of most people and b) it's still a major deception on the part of the admins and not something I agree with at all. The best course of action would be to stop using the site and delete your account, and await any legal action against them.

While people do use the "anonymous" feature just to be jerks, it's mainly used for just that, anonymity. For Formspring to take that away and "reveal" them is ridiculous. The people being mean anonymously are bad, but trying to one up them is no better, especially from a company.

Re: "Formspring.me" service to reveal identities of anonymous users - March 12th 2010, 03:53 PM

I haven't asked anything rude, but just things personal to friends that I'm scared to ask really. So yeah, this is going to hurt me alot if it happens. And my friends, to be honest. The article confused me when it was speaking of how they are going to..reveal everyone though. I'm stupid with computers. Is there a way I can get out of not showing up?

And wow, this is also going to start alot of harrassing! They give away your email!

Oh, I just read the last few sentences. So I just send an email and it won't show up? Or it will but only a few seconds?

When all your friends have come and gone,
And the sun no longer shines,
And the happiness for which you long is washed away like an ocean's tide,
When all the hard times outweigh the good,
And all your words are misunderstood,
When the day seems lost from the start
You must follow your heart,
You must follow your heart.

eek. would be bad for people who have used it to 'anonymously' insult others. i do actually feel bad for people who have posted stuff that could cause upset if it's revealed. i've deleted my account now anyways, i don't want anything more to do with that site.

Is this actually real or just an April fool to get people panicking?
I haven't sent any offensive messages at all, but I have asked some questions that I wouldn't be comfortable with asking openly, so I won't really be happy if our identities are revealed. >_>

so if their giving away OUR email people can attach viruses to our incoming messages and hack our computer! this has happened THREE times to me AFTER i visted formspring, i am seriously deleting my account, thats an invasion of privacy, they dont have the right to give out our personal information.
also how do you delete your account, do you delete it by disabling it?

It's possible that this story is a hoax: http://www.inquisitr.com/66425/forms...-private-data/ (Edit: The original article now seems to redirect to this one, which I guess confirms it.)

I still think it would be best, if the people who used the anonymous feature didn't do it to be mean or crude. Don't post anything you can live down.

Well i dont have an account, yet ive been asking some kids questions. So how would an identity be revealed?

On that note... When reported as spam, does it block messages from your IP address?

Ah, well that is alright then otherwise a lot of people would have been in trouble when it was revealed. Still, I think the site is a bit stupid and wouldn't create an account there anyway.
