Re: Glenn Beck 'Restoring Honor' Rally Draws Tens of Thousands to National Mall - September 1st 2010, 04:52 PM

How many of you actually listened to the speech? Or did you automatically label him because he's on Fox News and "everyone on Fox news is horrible"? His speech was about bringing this nation back to the Judeo-Christian values it was founded upon, and there is -nothing- wrong with that. Even if we don't have as many Christians as we used to (about 17% now that aren't Christian, which is still a pretty small minority), the values this nation was founded upon are similar across religions. We -all- aspire to be good people, no matter what faith we practice. Even atheists who practice no faith still aspire to be "good" people. What's wrong with that? MLK's niece was at the rally, and supported him without a bulletproof vest, despite the fact that she was putting herself in danger. Good for her! Her uncle would be SO proud of her.

I don't understand how you can say Glenn Beck is a disgrace to MLK. Explain that one to me?

I do tune into Glenn Beck's show when I can (there isn't a market for Fox here sadly) and it seems just as I haven't watched his speech you haven't watched his show! I will watch it now. I have however seen Ann Coulter's Tea Party speeches and they seem logical but when you actually listen to every word you realize they are quite content-less.

This is still entirely about your standard of right - you err when you believe that a Christian politician is by definition right and a Satanist politician is by definition wrong, by your own standards. Any person can call themselves Christian if they to a certain extent follow the bible, just as any person can call themselves a Satanist... well for almost any reason. Their political beliefs are separate from that.

Before you jump to any conclusions, I realize that there are Christians who support abortion, but Obama also has no Christian testimony. There is no evidence that he is a born-again Christian.
I need a source on that first one, and I love the way "Christian" has suddenly become "born-again Christian"...

He never said Obama was a Maoist, as you stated, he simply said there were "so many Maoists hanging around the White house". Also I watch his show daily, and how it was cut, makes it appear to be more directed then it, in actuality, is.

It doesn't matter how he presents his beliefs, what's important is the statements themselves. Of course context is important but in this case it's irrelevant, he's clearly stating the White House has a large communist presence.

The entire phrasing of the sentence is what is wrong with this. Love, kindness, selflessness, acceptance and the like aren't Judeo-Christian values, any more than they are Buddhist values or Hindi values or secular humanist values. They're values held by all good people, and they're values we still hold dearly today. We don't need to "go back" to them because we never left. In fact we're much closer to them than when America was founded! But the way that phrase is worded every time it is used makes it seem as if you need to be Christian to really have those values and implies than if we all become Christian then the country would be a better place and there is plenty wrong with that message.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours and in time our atoms will return once again to reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend, and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

I'm a satanist myself, and Kitty, I hope you realize that just because me and you are the pretty much complete opposite on the scale, doesn't mean I'm bad, and that my morals are automatically shot, so why does a christian politician all of a sudden become better then a satanist, is it because the title he holds?

Also, you need to get out of your atmospheric fish bowl and realize that your definition of "right and good" isn't the only one.

edit: I'm not really a satanist, but I bet you already dismissed what I was saying by the time you read the first four words.

Can we leave a person's stance on abortion out of this for once in our lives? There are far more abhorrent things being done to people that are ALREADY alive and suffering in this world. Genocides, drug wars. Bush started the Iraq War. It's killed over 4000 American soldiers so far. (Not including Afghanistan War or native casualties).

As for teaching evolution in school. I don't believe that ignorance is the way to live. The only way to be a full, well rounded, well informed person is to be exposed to opinions that we don't agree with. I bring this up because no one person from any one religion has all the answers. Religion (and I count atheism here) creates a scope through which we see everything. We're all blinded in some way. I don't see why we have to fear someone of a different religion or oppose them solely because of their religion. At the heart of it - all major religions put our core human values on a pedestal and try to guide people to be good. No religion goes about it in exactly the same way, but that is no reason to oppose someone's opinions from the outset simply because they go about being a good person differently than you.
