Tulsa Airport Uses Full Body Scanners - February 22nd 2009, 05:35 PM

Article Here
Quote:
It was only a matter of time - the first airport in the nation has switched to full body scanners as a replacement for the usual metal detector at the checkpoint.

The scanners use electromagnetic waves to create an image of you - sans clothes. The image is viewed by a TSA agent in a nearby room, which should at least mean you don't hear their chuckles as you pass through the scanner.

A TSA screener who operates the machine reported that the images "are not pornographic at all", and that she merely sees them as "a thing that could have something on it".

But make no mistake - the 3D images will show all your parts to the screener, right down to the size of your breasts and genitals.

The trial aims to determine whether the full body scanners can be a true replacement for metal detectors, and whether the use of the scanners increases, or decreases efficiency at the checkpoint.

During the first day of operation, only 2 out of 1039 passengers declined to use the scanner. Of course, this could simply be because the general public is not fully aware what these new machines are, and just what the images reveal.

Personally I don't really care what they see, I'm in favor of anything that will help me get from one end of the checkpoint to the next as fast as possible. If this technology is what it takes, then I'm all for it.

After Tulsa, the next airports scheduled to receive the new scanning technology are San Francisco, Miami, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque.
Opinions on this? Personally, I think that I would be hesitant to go through one because I don't want just anyone seeing exactly what my body looks like in such detail but I am aware that it would speed up my trip time. I'm all for not having to wait in lines.

Okay, I don't like this idea at all. I don't like the idea of anybody other than a partner or a doctor seeing my body naked.

As long as Rules are applied I see nothing wrong with this.

Here is another article on the subject matter. I think they'll spread if the results in Tulsa are good, so you might see them sooner than you think.

They're even going to transfer naked images of small children on these screens?
The complications of this could be horrendous.

Lol Google image it. They don't even show nipples. It's just shapes.

I'm whatever about it. Safety is important. Although one article said it slowed things down.

Hey, I'm for it. Those people will see thousands of people a day, its not like they are gonna pick out just mine and post it everywhere. Even then, whats to be scared of, like someone said, it blurs out most things that are identifying.

I don't really have a feeling about it either way. If it works, then fine; I'd use it. If it didn't work, then fine; I wouldn't use it.

I'm fine with it, as it's a much better security procaution. Yes, it would scan through the children but would you rather have that it didn't, and then children could carry various illegal, non-metallic items through (i.e. great way to terrorism or smuggling)? If suspected, I assume they'd be physically strip-searched. Either that or this full body scanner method.

I'm not really sure what to make of this.. I mean the old method seemed to work - when applyed correctly. And I'm really not comforted at the thought of anyone seeing my body.
But in a robotic, emotionaly braindead sense, I guess it is more effective.

Pictures are less detailed than I would imagine. Well, all the more reason to use it.

I guess if it's convienent.

But won't this just lead to more machines that invade personal space and privacy.

Re: Tulsa Airport Uses Full Body Scanners - February 23rd 2009, 03:48 PM

I think it's important to remember that these machines are used by people for hours and hours of their working day. They are looking out for anything that could put people in danger, I'm sure they aren't bothered by the size of people etc. They are just images, not photographs of naked people and if you look at the google images of them, they really aren't anything to freak out about in my opinion. I think if they figure out a way to ensure that things don't get slowed down in airports, then they will work really well.

They are more effective than metal detectors... I was recently in an airport and the metal detector went off. I was patted down and as the woman went over my arm she felt a rather thick bracelet I was wearing, I had my sleeves down, I said it was a bracelet and asked if she wanted me to take it off, she said 'no, it's fine' and then I was just thinking, I could have had a blade or something hidden under that and I'd have got through no problem. Okay that's just my overactive imagination, but at the same time, I would feel safer knowing that everyone on my flight had to pass through a full body scanner before being allowed on the plane.

Meh, they aren't all that detailed, and honestly, I wouldn't care too much if they were. If someone wants to look at my sexy body, who am I to stop them

But seriously, if it speeds things up, I really don't mind.

Re: Tulsa Airport Uses Full Body Scanners - February 23rd 2009, 05:47 PM

If I was in an airport with this, I would feel at the most slightly embarrassed to be seen so fully like this. However, if I was in an airport where someone had a gun or bomb or something, I'd wish they had had one of these machines and made it compulsory!

I don't see the problem, its a great idea. Nobody should be embarrassed, the people working on the machines might laugh for a few days, but it will become routine afterwards. I highly doubt doctors laugh at people naked, and they are professionals too. My friend is a beauty therapist and does about 6 bikini waxes a day. She said for the first week it was hilarious and embarrassing but now its just her job and she's never sees it as anything else. She says she's far too busy worrying about what to have for tea or when her boyfriend is going to call - things we all think about at work! I don't think the people at the airports will see it as anything else either

Smile and maybe tomorrow
Youll see the sun come shining through for you

It's either this or they use an X-ray machine and metal detectors, then, if need be, do a strip search on you. Strip search involves well, no machines, although it's a rather invasive method of invading personal space. But, since it has no machines and the current way is pretty slow, we can use that instead [/sarcasm]

It's been used at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport for a few years now. Haven't heard of any complaints from it.
