this will surely piss me off.

sure, i recognize that their main focus is to prevent copyright infringement, but I use Mediafire and Rapidshare for things that don't infringe on any copyrights, so I don't want to see them disappear.

Fuck. stupid government

Meh, copyright infringement will never die. Short of cutting the cable, there is no way to really stop the internet from doing what it wants. All you can really do is inconvenience people with legitimate purposes. The hackers, copyright infringers, child pornographers, etc will always get around it somehow.

according to what I've read of the bill (and look at that, domain is fucking blocked now; I wonder why?) hosting websites like Mediafire, Rapidshare, and Dropbox are all likely targets for being shut down. It's not definite, but they're certainly focusing more on those sites than some others that handle way more sensitive material

They might as well try to shut down the billions of free porn sites that exist (I assume there are that many. Am I right?).

This is obviously only gonna apply to websites hosted from within the US?

What about websites hosted from UK... Australia, NIGERIA... lol, anything, even Russia. Those will be unaffected. People will set up new ones soon enough, ran from abroad, and there won't be shit anyone will be able to do about it.

Then politics doesn't care about you either. Truth. You've got to make your voice heard, if you want to be listened to. But that's too logical for some people, so let me go a step further. Not making your voice heard, leaves other people free to hijack it by speaking on your behalf, even if they don't actually give a shit about you. That's politics. So, make your voice heard. That's not a quote from anywhere. That's just me.

China? they never seem to have an awful lot of copyright laws.

Well, if there is that many, I imagine trying to shut them all down would pointless...

A bunch of shut down sites have already moved to different domains, but I've been told that they need to have actual physical servers in countries who don't cooperate with the U.S. in order to avoid being shut down... Is that right?

I'm not certain, but that doesn't sound like a stretch by any means.

US has its claws in a lot of countries.

But I don't think Russia or China are one of them. Really doubt it. Brazil and it's neighbours probably also not, and about half of Africa.

Let's be realistic here. The US always has, and will continue to, enforce it's views and laws onto other countries. I see no reason why they will not here.

Soon the government will control everything about our lives, so we'd better get used to it, as said earlier in the thread.
