Organ Wagons To Make House Calls - December 3rd 2010, 02:31 AM

http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/loca...m-20101201-APX

It might sound a little disturbing to some people but a new pilot program will attempt to recover kidneys from people who die at home in Manhattan.
A team of organ specialists will have about 20-minutes after a cardiac-arrest patient is declared dead to arrive at the home, check a donor registry, determine medical eligibility, obtain a family member's consent and get the person into a specialized ambulance.
A special team will monitor 9-1-1 calls about people in danger of dying and they will travel directly to a person's home without being summoned.
The program is being launched Wednesday. It could eventually lead to thousands more organs donated each year. But the five-month trial, a collaboration between Bellevue Hospital and New York City's police and fire departments, could be declared a success without a single organ being recovered, organizers say.

Somehow i have negative views on this... the last thing a family needs is someone from the organ mafia coming to your house after someone dies who isn't on the donor list

More people should be on the donor list anyway. To be honest, I think you should be on it by default if you are over 18 and have to opt out of it.... otherwise there are plenty of people who wouldnt mind, but are simply too lazy to opt in.

But if they aren't organ donors, the team won't get the organs, and it sounds the team will be quite discret, 3 people, one being for the sole purpose of talking to the grieving family, with respect. Not a huge group of people crowding round like vultures.

However, seeing how so many people die waiting for organs, if this can get more, than its got to be worth it. Even if upset families a little more. We are talking about saving lives here.

If they do it right, it could be very good.

Although on almost every other issue I disagree with you, here I agree, this is a good idea, and people should have to opt out at 18, as many are just too lazy.

I agree with everything you just said. Especially that we should have to opt out of organ donation, NOT opt in.

Well, I'm donating my body to science so they wouldn't like me =p Nor would they want my kidneys, I'll probably need new ones eventually though D=

But wouldn't it just be easier to grow them? ¬.¬
