f my life website - February 23rd 2009, 06:16 PM

Today I was chatting on MSN with one of my friends, and she sent me a link to a website, fmylife, saying it was really funny and I should check it out. I did, and it's basically people listing bad and embarrassing things that have happened to them, which the others then read for entertainment. I admit that I was laughing at lots of them, but then I got to thinking - why is this so funny? Why do we as a society find it entertaining to hear about the misfortunes of others?

The more I think of it, so many forms of entertainment are essentially just mocking other people's misery. What do you think of entertainment like this? What does it say about people that this is what we find amusing?

If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

There is a very good term for this:
Schadenfreude - taking please from misfortunes of others.

I've seen this site a couple of times. It's funny.

Often I lie wide awake, thinking of things I could make.
But I donít seem to have the parts to build them.
I am so scared of what will kill me in the end, for I am not prepared.
I hope I will get the chance to be someone, to be human.

I've never understood why people have enjoyed laughing at others. I'll admit that I love to read embarrassing moments when I have the spare time. I have the ability to laugh at myself when I do something stupid though.

I think it's good to laugh at other peoples misfortunes as long as they can see the funny side of it as well and they're not speaking to you about it in search of comfort or advice. The people who submit their stories are essentially posting them for the entertainment of others so i see nothing wrong with it in this case.

I've been on that website a few times before, gives me a few giggles when i need a laugh.

I've been on the website a few times in the past week. We laugh at the misfortunes at others because we're glad that it didn't happen to us, and the fact that said embarrassing moment hasn't happened to us makes us feel superior. I think it's good for the people who share their stories, being able to poke fun at their misfortunes, but not good for society who take pride in capitalizing on others' misfortunes.

If someone posted it up, they must think it's funny, too, in retrospect.

And Vincent, I think it also has to do, sometimes, with the ability to relate. Like I read stories online about stupid things customers say, and laugh at the customers, because I can remember similar things happening to me at work AND being the silly customer.

Re: f my life website - February 24th 2009, 12:18 PM

I think a lot of the stories that are posted on there aren't so much people's 'misfortunes' but more, I don't know, 'cringing' moments...? Take one for example - this is at the top of the page at the moment...

Quote:
Today, I called my boyfriend crying to tell him I had the most terrible day. He said I should come over, and he would make me feel better. I said I just want to snuggle, and I was impressed with his sincerity. Then he said, "can we snuggle... with my dick in you?" FML
...personally, I wouldn't call that a misfortune. I think I find the website funny because I feel that it is *meant* to be funny. As for laughing at people's misfortunes in general, I think it's because of reasons that other people have already mentioned - you can relate, or imagine yourself in the situation yourself. If it was something that had strongly effected someone else, I don't think many people would actually laugh or find it funny.

I never liked shows like "America's Funniest Home Videos" because it's real people in pain, and I just can't handle that. (I get sympathy pains.) If I know it's not real, like a slasher movie, I can handle it.

But yeah, I do laugh at other people's embarrassment I think we do it because we spend so much time building up facades that it helps to see another person in a moment of weakness, just so we can remember that we're all human...Or at least that's how I rationalize it. lol

Maybe we enjoy reading others misfortunes because it makes our life seem a bit better knowing we aren't that unlucky.

Re: f my life website - February 25th 2009, 02:41 AM

Hmm, when I read the title, I thought it was about websites showing suicides (those do exist, won't post the links though). Anyways, I do find lots of good humour and entertainment in people's pain, whether emotional or physical, hearing their screams, looking at them as they writhe in pain, etc... . Not sure why exactly, it's always been like that. Sometimes they get killed from what happens, sometimes it's the aftermaths of an accident or sometimes they live. All in good fun, so it's fine.

As for this though, it's just people listing stuff. I assume we can relate in some degree to some of it or just imagining how embrassingly funny it is. Idk, usually I find those things rather dull, boring, mindless. There's no pictures or anything, no videos, unless I look some up or imagine some.

Re: f my life website - February 25th 2009, 03:10 AM

I think most of these new reality shows and tons of online entertainment has came down to being this way. I think it's sad to hear what happened to others, sure they're alright to post it, but I'm sure other people post some stuff about their enimies and friends just to make the other person look bad. Back to the reality TV bit, I think a lot of those shows do it too, for example American Idol how horrible that show is to the minds of the young people. They have to tape them on their bad moments and their good moments then use their bad moments as them tripping as the teaser for the next episode. I know I've actually went a different route than most of the people on here but I can't find humor in stuff like that.
