Wow I didn't even know it had been shutdown. It's been like 5 months since I've used it. I guess I'll have to start using Ares.

I'm neutral. On one hand, I think it was always funny that people actually used it. Kind of made me lol.

On the other, hopefully all the people displaced will used torrents instead, become enlightened.

I think it's hilarious, personally. ^^ Limewire was a peer2peer torrent thing, except all you had to do was search it on the program. Google ftw.

Re: Limewire - December 5th 2010, 10:34 AM

Limewire was just a phase for me and then I got fed up of it and the viruses it gave me and learnt about Pirate Bay.

Also once my laptop broke and the shop refused to fix it because I had Limewire on it.

It's not really surprising it's shutting down. It's probably lost most of its customers to torrents.

Personally, I'm glad it got shutdown. Why someone would use Limewire in 2010 is beyond me, but I'm just glad that torrents are able to be used. Some of the people I've talked to who use Limewire believe that torrents are "too complicated" to learn. Now they almost have no choice. Muhahaha!

I only found out today when my dad tried to install it. I don't like Limewire anymore anyway and for some reason it never worked on my laptop :| I think there was a firewall issue. I use Vuze now.

About time, I used limewire on and off needless to say I've gotten viruses from it several times. I've had to go so far as to wipe my computer clean. Limewire was only good for the people adding the viruses.

I use bit-torrent and download from 'Piratesbay' Haven't had any problems with them, plus they grantee all there material is safe.

I kinda love that everyone's like "Eh, I download elsewhere now." when the reason Limewire is ceasing its functions is because of illegal downloading. I think it really says a lot that we panic more about "Oh no, where will I get my music now?!" than "Hm, I'm not sure this is fair for Limewire."

Honestly, it's kind of like someone creating a unicycle with barbed wire wrapped around the seat that gets banned for being a unicycle. Of course there's a part of you that says "that's not really fair" and that knows if they had used this hypothetical rule to ban normal unicycles people would be raging like crazy, but, since it was such a craptacular product in the first place, no one can be arsed to do anything more than laugh that anyone even still used it.

Try reading this: http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/beginners-guide

Basically, the tl;dr is that it is a way to download large files efficiently. Instead of downloading them from a single server, you connect to a bunch of other people who already have the files and download a small piece from each of them.

A lot of people use it to illegally download movies and music, but it has many legitimate uses as well including downloading Linux distros, free legal music/movies, freeware games/apps, etc.

My personal favorite torrent download sites are thepiratebay.org and kickasstorrents.com. I like to use uTorrent (downloadable from site I linked to above) to download files.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Just spit-balling, but perhaps they meant when marijuana is legal, they'll download music legally? Otherwise, this statement doesn't make sense to me O.o

I had some really good spyware sweepers on my computer so I never got any virus's from Limewire. Therefor, I am sad that it shut down. I've already found other ways to get my music though, so its okay

See, I never got a single virus from Limewire. xD And I used it ALL THE TIME. I guess I'm just a n00b. I've tried Frostwire, and it just pisses me off. (I say that a lot, don't I?) It's like a slower and less effective Limewire. I think I might have to look into this whole torrent thing.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mediafire yet to download from. Infact, I'm actually surprised torrenting is so popular.

Aren't they getting rid of mediafire soon? I swear someone mentioned it on here a few days ago. I do use mediafire now and then but sometimes I download remixes instead of the actual song on mediafire by mistake.

There's some new...thing happening that's going to target file hosting sites like Mediafire, Rapidshare, etc. I guess we'll see. It'd be a shame considering it's a really good file hosting site that people do use for its proper purpose.
