She can't afford heat but has no problem buying a big screen & xbox - December 18th 2010, 05:45 PM

Quote:
Showing her Georgia Power bills in the one warm room of her home, Raymeica Kelly explains how her mother, sister and herself were turned away from the Energy Assistance Program on Wednesday morning after standing in line for four hours. All three complained that the system the Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council uses to give out the assistance needs improving.

Poor woman I can't imagine how hard it must be for her to go though winter without heat. Maybe if she sells her 52' tv she could afford it.

It does look pretty bad, but how can we be sure she bought those things? Maybe they were a gift or are just being borrowed from someone else or perhaps she used to make more money than she does now.

if those were gifts then i kinda feel sorry for her. but if not then i think she should suck it up and stop buying the other things. don't try to get help for this if your own spending problems (i.e, buying a big screen tv) is part of the problem

Very possible.

But there's nothing stopping her from selling them now, is there..

Even if it was just a gift, if the person who gave it to her was that generous they wouldn't mind her selling it for heat. :-/

It looks more like a 42" TV.

To be fair, it does not say whether or not there are any other people living in the house. What if it was a teenage son who was working and saved money to buy the TV and Xbox? Or another unrelated person living with them?

Surely if there were other people living there, able to provide such equipment to the household, they could also supply some money towards the heating that THEY also use?

yeah if we have no prove that she bought it then it is a little different However, they have to pay for that power and if they can not afford heat, then, it is kinda stupid to have your power going to that.

It could be some weird set up between tenants. Someone says they will pay for power and the other says they will pay for heat. Since they can't afford heat, the people have to go and get some sort of assistance.

I am grasping at straws, but without evidence it is just assumptions we are making.

Plus it doesn't say how they are heating the apartment. If it is electric, then they probably will lose their power in a few days anyway if they don't pay it in time.

true but if they had an agreement why would they agree to something they knew they could not afford?

I can make one to heat her main living space in about 2 hours, plus one hour at Home Depot. All she needs is a window and about $150

I don't know the whole story about how she got the TV and Xbox, but I DO know that there are a lot of people who will spend money on nice electronics before paying their bills.

If she chooses not to pay for heat find, but unless she has children or other dependants the government should not help her.

She does realize that the Xbox is a space-heater in of itself, right? Mine used to be able to keep my bedroom nice and toasty.

Seriously though, there needs to be more regulation on welfare- I.E- what you can and can't spend it on.

Eh, shit happens though. Someone said that she was unemployed. How long was she unemployed? I had a roommate that had to have his friend cover his three months of rent because he didn't have a job.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions here. Yes, she has a big TV and an Xbox. She also has a small, cheap space heater. She could have bought the TV months ago and just be having hard times right now. My family has very little heat, but we make do without help. She probably could too, if she wanted to.

She whispered to her own reflection "I will be strong."

Sure, but she should have sold the tv before asking for a handout.

Once again, it's an assumption that it is her TV so she has the right to sell it.

But if it is electric (considering it is the power bill she is talking about) and not gas heating, it doesn't really matter whether or not she can use the television.

And selling the TV may not be worth it. She wouldn't get full price for it and we also don't know what version of the Xbox 360 it is. If it is one of the earlier ones that managed to survive the red ring, chances are she will have a hard time selling it. Not to mention how would she go about selling it? Ebay is not always the easiest thing to figure out and what about shipping? I wouldn't trust selling on Craigslist because what would happen if the person tries to break into your house?

To play devil's advocate, she's probably get about 900 bucks for that thing, at the most. Thats... 3 months of heat and electricity MAYBE if you're EXETREMELY CONSERVATIVE.

She would have had to ask eventually.

Like I said, if she used the welfare she was getting to buy the TV, she needs to be held accountable. If it's an older thing and they're hitting some hard times, that's different.

Often I lie wide awake, thinking of things I could make.
But I dont seem to have the parts to build them.
I am so scared of what will kill me in the end, for I am not prepared.
I hope I will get the chance to be someone, to be human.

Our room mates had to sell their TV and xbox to pay for rent. They sold it in one day, cash, on craigslist...

They can *SELL* it before bitching about not having money for heat... Oh yeah, she can also get another job (or A job).

900 bucks will pay for an entire winter of heat.

If it's not hers, then it belongs to someone who is staying at that house, then they should sell it, and contribute something for living there.

Most people here would sell it at a pawn shop, of course they wouldn't get much for it. But a little bit of money is better than nothing.

I'd think it'd be alot less than 900, actually. The responsible thing to do would be to sell it, even if she did have to ask eventually. I don't see how it's different. Wether it's new or old the tv should be sold. It's kind of common sense that warth outweighs a tv and an x box.
