Pothole Kills Woman - December 19th 2010, 09:05 PM

As a the rear wheel of a car went over a pothole at 70 miles per hour, a massive chunk of concrete was sent shooting at high speed into the vehicle behind it, killing the woman in the passenger seat.

Well it is sad, at the same time you must admit she was probably going WAY too fast.

Nope, if you read the story it is revealed that both vehicles were going the posted speed limit (70 mph), and that the road condition was declared as the primary cause of the accident.

but still if you know the condition of the road is bad you should KNOW not to be 70 when they are bad. The speed limits assume that the conditions are perfect not raining fairly smooth road ECT.

I know this is bad, but when I first read the title i was like "Steph killed someone?!"

Anyways, yeah that is just horrible. The roads here are terrible. Potholes and bumps everywhere, but we are so skilled that we know where we need to slow down and try and miss certain holes.

Maybe road crews need to keep a better eye on roads.

In light of the fact there was a pothole on the road, 70mph was too fast to be going - although that if anything makes it incredible that the state authorities had not imposed their subsequent 55mph reduction and/or coned off the section of the freeway before this happened, rather than doing so after the event. The logic behind that decision (for ultimately there must have been some decision not to reduce the limit) is to my mind incredulous; you almost get the impression it actually takes someone dying for things to be done when they should have been done in the first place. Makes you wonder what kind of world we live in...

It's a tragic accident, but as far as the drivers themselves are concerned it was precisely that and it's not fair to apportion blame to them. Expect to see some kind of lawsuit being brought against the authorities though, and that is annoying purely because all this could have been so preventable.

Re: Pothole Kills Woman - December 20th 2010, 01:46 PM

Going 70 mph over a pothole is far too fast as the car is likely to be damaged in some way. The article said one of the tires was flat from the pothole, indicating damage to the car was done due to going too fast, so in terms of money, those damages should be paid for by the family. The death is tragic, especially because there were no moving violations and it was caused by an extremely unexpected result of poor road conditions. To be honest, I never thought something like that even could happen. I would also be amazed if the family did not sue the appropriate government level. I could see the defense of "the driver should've been going slower considering there were children in the car despite going at the speed limit". However, one doesn't expect this to happen and it seems like this was waiting to happen from the poor roads. A death that could've easily been prevented and the family did nothing wrong to result in it.
