Preteen Gets Her Last Wish: A Wedding - February 26th 2009, 02:34 AM

Quote:
(Newser) – Nine-year-old Jayla Cooper dreamed of her wedding day, and even a grim medical diagnosis couldn't keep her from her wish. The 9-year-old, suffering from an aggressive form of leukemia that has left her with just weeks to live, recently "married" her 7-year-old sweetheart, a fellow leukemia patient at a Texas hospital, ABC News reports.
"He is very cute, and I love him," Jayla said of her groom, who has a less aggressive form of cancer. Their ceremony, which 150 guests attended, is an unusual but not unprecedented last request. "It makes perfect sense," said a hospital rep. "What little girl doesn't dream about her wedding day?"
This story brought tears to my eyes. :-(

Ohmygosh. That makes me want to cry; I actually teared up. That is so sweet. I'm glad she could have that last wish.

That's awesome she was able to have that. Its a shame though, to die at such a young age.

Yes! Lets let the 7 year old be heart broken when she dies! Though, he may not have long to live either.

I take it that by 'marriage' being in inverted commas that it means it wasn't a real one? In that case, I think this is alright, but if it was a realy wedding it was just stupid. Why should they bend the law because she's dying? Plus at that age they both were definatly too young to understand love.

I don't really think is anything special, or new about this though. Though, this is only my opinion.

I think it is wonderful that this little girl got her dream come true before her death. Her attitude about life and death is admirable. This is a really touching story.

I think it's sweet that they let that happen for her as her last wish. But at the time, I feel sorry for the poor boy who she 'married' cause he'll have to deal with losing her.

I think it's nice that she got her dying wish. So what if they had to bend the law. Jade Goody's husband bail conditions were waved off so he could spend his wedding night with her as she's dying.

Well let's say the girl/boy read the King & King (or was it called the Prince & prince gay children's book).

Furthemore, at that age boys/gals are icky, so wouldn't marrying your same-sex best friend be much cooler as a last death wish?

Yeah but until you're sexually mature, how do you even know who you're attracted to in that way? I had little crushes but really it was just because the guy was funny or whatever, I didn't really feel physical attraction at that age.

Plus, as a society we put a great amount of praise on traditional marriage. And at that age you're pretty much just doing what the adults in your life want you to do.

A lot of people know their sexuality when they're young. Most say about 8 or 9 is when they know that they don't like the opposite sex.

I gotta get on the boat with RK now, I wonder what they would have done if she was gay? I could see them not doing it for some convoluted reason or another.

Yeah, there probably would have been someone who prevented it because they thought it sent "the wrong message to other children" or something like that.

So how did that girl know she was a hetero?

I'm not arguing whether she was attracted to that other kid or not. I'm pretty sure even in the case of this gal there was no sexual attraction involved.

I'm just giving a hypothetical situation, what would they have done if the a kid asked for a marriage before its death & asked to marry somebody of the same gender. Have you ever seen little girls playing house? Come on, somebody gotta be dada & it can be a girl (without any sexual innuendos implied).

& it's "not necessarily gay", but you know how when kids act out so much for instance best same sex friends that are so close that folks joke they are gona be married when they grow up.

Regardless, they were friends and he still would have been heartbroken. Of course it wasn't a real marriage, she's not old enough to get married I wouldn't think. Didn't you dream about your wedding as a child? I think it was more the event for her than the actual meaning behind it. I've always wanted to get married and I often think of what it will be like.

Actually, in quite a few states, it is not against the law for two that young to marry. Of course under a certain age there has to be a judge ruling to make sure its not a pre-arranged marriage.
Plus, it should not matter if they understand love or not, they will never have had the privilege of growing old enough to understand that love. So why should a last wish be denied just because of something out of their control?

I doubt she could have possibly known her sexuality at that age, and I doubt she even understood what love really was. It was probably just something she dreamed of, like being a princess. I hope though, that one day homosexuality is just as accepted as hetero. I thought it was a cute story.

manipulative crap really. It's ok that she got what she wanted I suppose and it was shrewd, especially if presents were involved but she's going to die in the unknown future. Such a thing is therefore pointless

I don't understand why some people are being rude towards this story. The little girl is dying. She has no real concept of marriage and it was a fairytale for her and made her happy.

Of course this wasn't a real marriage. Her "husband" will be sad when she dies, but he will be able to move on. That's just life. What do you think happens to adults when they lose someone they love? They move on most of the time and try to live life to the best of their ability the way their deceased loved ones would want them to polka dot. She already knows she's terminally ill and this is the one thing that truly made her happy. Now she can rest in total peace and that's a beautiful thing. Stop taking this so seriously. It was a dying child's last wish and she got it. Plain and simple.
Quote:

Who are you to make such a statement? If this is something that makes the little girl happy, what's it to you? She's going to die a happy and accomplished little girl and that's all her parents and loved ones could ever ask.

According to whom? We cannot know how she feels, we have to hear it from the news who in turn hear it from the family. Now, unless the family are incapable of lying these is bound to be some hidden agenda or perhaps she's not happy. We'll never know.

Then there would be absolutely no reason to even ask for a marriage in the first place. You're taking this situation entirely out of context. If you can't understand what this article was about, you should probably go back and read it again because the message from the little girl was pretty clear.
