DARFUR, SUDAN - March 4th 2009, 01:18 AM

DARFUR, SUDAN**
-ty turquoise.

I really can't sit here and say i know much about this topic yet.
But, today i saw two incredible speakers from the Me to We foundation who gave me news that i was shocked at.

I don't feel as though i am very behind in politics because i do like to follow them.. but i had no idea that one of the largest genocide's was happening during my lifetime.

If any of you have any info on the 6 yeargenocide war on Sudan, Africa please discuss!

The topics such as the small arms trade, what can canada do?
what has canada done?
why hasn't the UN done more?
How can our lifetime start changing this world.

How should We handle this situation? The usa can't play world police on every dramatic event.

Re: DANFUR, SUDAN - March 4th 2009, 02:47 AM

Not quite sure where the US plays a part in what i brought up?
But while we're here, the united states just pulled out trillions of dollars to save their own economy which was absolutely necessary for the state of north america. My question now is: The price of giving everyone in the world a source of water, education and food is 180 billion. We can pull out trillions for one country's economy, but not for the world's poverty?

odd.

Now back to the Sudan conversation..

I'll fix the title for you. I honestly don't know much about this myself either.

Re: DARFUR, SUDAN - March 4th 2009, 03:06 PM

Sudan hasn't had a stable government in decades. After colonial rule, it basically became a series of regimes that held little control over the warlords in the west. Hence, most of western Sudan (Darfur) has been embattled for years. U.N. and A.U. peacekeeping forces haven't done much, mostly because it's hard to prevent the random, sporadic attacks on the refugee camps and villages.

Right now, it's considered one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, and by the way things have shaped up, I don't think it will end any time soon.

The genocide is the fault of the Sudanese government, partly, because it funds the militia group Janjaweed which performs the ethnic cleansing in Darfur. However, The International Criminal Court (part of the United Nations) today issued an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir (the President of Sudan) for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Sanctions were also brought against the Sudanese government. I don't know what else you actually want the United Nations to do?

The United Nations has no army, and it doesn't actually intervene in conflicts. It sends in soldiers of its member states to perform humanitarian aid, such as the protection of trucks of food supplies. You must understand that it's just not simple. Convoys of food supplies from the World Food Programme (an agency of the United Nations) were attacked by armed groups, people were killed. It's not always easy to deliver humanitarian aid, because Sudan is a dangerous country to be in.

180 billion? That's actually nothing compared to the amount of debt that the United States is in. The United States is in $13 trillion of debt, nearing $14 trillion, and that's the highest amount of debt in the world. The Western world could afford 180 billion, but just giving it would cause the value of money to drop which would be a very bad idea during a time of recession such as this. It'd be a bad idea at any time. Some governments are also incredibly corrupt and will redirect aid to areas such as the military or just refuse it, for example - North Korea. Lastly, North America is a continent, not a state.
