Tattooed Barbie causes outrage.. - March 6th 2009, 11:00 AM

Barbie has changed quite a bit over her 50 years. She's been a princess, a mermaid, and most alarmingly, a NASCAR fan. But she's never gotten inked up...until now. That's right, kids. America's sweetheart now comes with tattoos, and some parents are outraged.
The Buzz is alive with articles on "Totally Stylin' Tattoos Barbie." Some parents remarked that they wouldn't buy a Barbie with tattoos, as it encourages girls to show off their bodies. To be fair, the blond bombshell doesn't come with tattoos already applied. It's up to the kids to attach the stickers where they see fit. The tattoos look to be the standard collection of hearts, stars, and butterflies. Sadly, there are no "Death Before Dishonor" or "Semper Fi" tattoos.
The doll also comes with temporary tats that kids can attach to Barbie's clothing or to themselves with a handy-dandy applicator. Despite the outrage, Barbie-maker Mattel has no plans to discontinue the doll. In fact, tatted-up Barbie is selling well. Searches are also moving at a brisk pace. Over the past day, queries on "tattoo barbie" and "buy tattoo barbie" have taken off.
It's also worth noting that this isn't the first time Barbie has done something controversial. A few years ago, Barbie's best friend Midge was pregnant. After parents complained, Wal-Mart pulled the doll. Stay tuned to see if tattooed Barbie suffers the same cruel fate, or if Mattel keeps it real.

....uummm I find this article quite amusing.

There is only one person who could ever
make you happy, and that person is you.

I don't see any problem with a tattooed barbie, or a pregnant barbie for that matter. Parents will be parents, and some of them will complain about anything, but c'mon.. it's only a toy! The tattoo in the picture is of a bow, hardly contraversial!

What kid has not marked themselves up with markers in an attempt to create tattoos?

Oh for crying out loud!!! Why aren't there protests or something about those chewing gums with "tattoo" stickers in the packets??? or just when these kind of stickers are sold separately? Or even worse! Pens! They are obviously evil! I can't remember how many times I "tattooed" myself with one of those.

I think having such toys is hugely beneficial. You play with it, get tired & become annoyed by the tattoos, at least for me it's learning to take these things seriously & I'll have to be stuck with one for most of my life, if I ever do a real one.

Word. I would make the permanent on barbie so kids know that tattoos don't come out. Educational value ftw.

I don't see the big deal? Children are going to see tattoos walking down the street or in the mall; pregnant women too. Parents need to get over it and begin parenting their children.

Sure or tried out those fake tattoos you can buy and apply. Is it really that big of a deal, most parents now have tattoos anyway.

Exactly! Kids today have much more 'cooler' toys than we did. And I feel so old for saying 'kids today'

But really now, what is the point of all the 'outrage'? It's a toy! And I think it's actually a good idea for a doll.

Some people with make a fuss over the littlest thing. I don't see an outrage over kids temporary tattoos. I mean it is all innocent fun really the tattoos of are hearts and butterflies for Christ's sakes. Why are people always freaking out about barbie?
I mean really?
It's a toy.
The kids aren't analyzing her anatomy,
her ring finger,
and they're not going to rush out and get a tattoo at age 7.
Seriously,
these "concerned parents" need to take a chill pill,

I think it's rather amusing, especially since the the makers knew the controversy which would cause and as the saying goes "no news is bad news". Controversy pushes up sales which is the goal

I wish I had a tattooed barbie. I'm so jealous, that looks awesome. I can't see why people are making a fuss. I thought the pregnant Midge was adorable when she came out, but I was "too old" for Barbies back then so I would not ask for her.

Oo thats so cool! And you're never too old for Barbies!

And I like how parents don't mind the barbies being dressed like complete sluts but give them little butterfly tattoos and it's suddenly controversial. Please.

Since Barbie's huge boobs and ass don't show off her body.. it's only the tattoos right?

Yeah it is rather ironic, it's most likely because people are used to the basic shape now. In general only the new is shocking, anything old is established and not as shocking

Oh jeez. There are many variations of Barbie that could easily cause a kid to do something in relation to themselves, so I don't see why it's any different for a tattooed Barbie.

If parents don't like it, they don't have to buy it.

Ah that's so stupid. My senior year of high school my drama club to a trip to New York. We had some free time and went to Toys R Us to ride the Ferris wheel. The line was too long so we went to the barbie house. We found pregnant Midge, bought it for our drama teacher, and presented it to her. I truly think that that Barbie was out of line mostly because Midge looked about 16. But the tattoo barbie isn't bad at all.

Do parents have to freak out over everything nowadays? If your kids are so sheltered that they haven't seen a heart tattoo on a barbie doll before, then they'll never be able to face the real world.

Plus it's not something they probably won't see anyways... unless they don't go to school or leave the house.

Honestly, I would have asked for this as a kid.

They did redesign her shape since I was a little kid. The only reason why I know this is because I used to spend countless hours lining up the stupid dolls when someone knocked them over. Oh, and Ken sometimes has non-helmet hair.

I can see why the pregnant Midge might be causing problems. I saw a picture of a Barbie without the stomach on and it was creepy.

Right... the parents have never seen someone walking down the street or on TV with tattoos and the slutiness of the barbie dolls is already off the charts, yet they're not complaining about that, they're whining about some silly stickers. Well, this goes to show 2 things: 1) No matter what you do/make, people will bitch , 2) People are morons, idiots, whatever your term is that you want to use.

oh god. its friggin butterflies, and hearts wat kind of damage can that do? by the time the kids are old enough to get the tats it wont b their old play thing that influenced them. its not like the kid is gonna get the barbie, then want a tat and throw a major tantrum for not gettin one, and if they do what are the parents gonna go do, b forced to give in. if that is the case then there are bigger problems.

You know what the really slutty dolls are. Those bratz dolls, they come with thongs, even the baby versions! Now that's ridiculous. Slutty slutty dolls, now parents have complained about them, but I don't think to the extent as this and that's just silly.

They'll give their kids wash on tattoo's, but not a Barbie with tattoos? O_o

So the fact that you can undress your barbie, and see her boob's, doesn't teach them to show off their body. What about all the slutty clothes barbie has, and the fact she wears mini skirts. This makes me laugh. Silly parents, this is the least of their worries if they would take a look at some of the other toys being produced.

Sometimes I think these kids and the parents have about the same intelligence, or perhaps the kid has more: perfect way to see a naked chick (although it's fake) while letting the parents allow you to do so. Stupid people are stupid.

Man, I would have loved a Tattoo Barbie when I was 8! But people are taking it way too seriously.

Who do you carry that torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Or do you carry it around just to burn things down?

Meet me tonight on the turnpike my darling,
where we believe in everything.
If we sweat all these debts then we're sure to drown,
so let's strap ourselves up to this engine now
with our God who we found laying under the back seat.

Yeah, it's double standards alright. The parents are probably delusional
