Docs seek gag orders to stop patients' reviews. - March 6th 2009, 12:04 PM

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090304/...gging_patients
Quote:
The anonymous comment on the Web site RateMDs.com was unsparing: "Very unhelpful, arrogant," it said of a doctor. "Did not listen and cut me off, seemed much too happy to have power (and abuse it!) over suffering people." Such reviews are becoming more common as consumer ratings services like Zagat's and Angie's List expand beyond restaurants and plumbers to medical care, and some doctors are fighting back. They're asking patients to agree to what amounts to a gag order that bars them from posting negative comments online. "Consumers and patients are hungry for good information" about doctors, but Internet reviews provide just the opposite, contends Dr. Jeffrey Segal , a North Carolina neurosurgeon who has made a business of helping doctors monitor and prevent online criticism.

The doctors should be open to criticism. The medical field is very closed and protected. If the doctor sucks, then their patients should be able to find out quickly. Teachers are posed online, businesses are, doctors should be.

Doctors have no right to say what a patient can do or not do on the internet..

People are not objective about their health and there are proper procedures to go through if you want to make a complaint. Posting what is likely to be most false information is ok is it? Where I call from that is called libel or defamation of character and is illegal

Is any information likely to be ok? People do have the right to complain about services and the doctors should have to improve. If they are doing a decent job, then they should also have positive reviews.

Yes, but there are proper methods to complain. For example on this site the administrators close and trash any threads which complain about a member and many other forums have it in there ToS.
Complaining on the internet will only lead to deformation of character and a witch hunt for what could be little more than a medically irrelevant personal grievance or even a misunderstanding. I am by no means saying do not complain but instead use the proper procedure.

I think it is a good idea. A lot of people have saved themselves from horror by using the ratemyprofessor site.

And how many have been put off for no valid reason? I doubt anyone knows because that would not be reported but I'd hazard a guess it's high

I'd like to see patients' reviews on a doctor before I see him/her. I personally think it would make the experience better and I would be able to know what the person was like before I get there.
