It's a bit of a shame. You don't want to turn off too many smokers. Where will the gov. make up the money?

Yeah, it discourages new smokers, and the gov makes money on old smokers.

So we should take advantage of smokers? Should we tax the hell out of popular products like caffeine?

I don't smoke so I don't really care. Maybe it will keep my friends from smoking around me so much

I can't say I care as it's not in the UK. But if it was I'd be all for it as it'd get me more customers and more money.

No, getting the money from smokers is a by-product. I don't want people to smoke, as it causes harm to them and me. Raising the price is to discourage new smokers.

Caffeine affects me and only me unlike nicotine. Too many times I've came home reeking of smoke and it cannot have been good for my lungs either. And yes, we should take advantage of smokers, smoking costs far more to the NHS than any taxes gained by HMRC

That's another great point, smokers, if they're allowed to use a public health care to pay for stuff that happened to them because of smoking, they deserve to pay more money to the gov't. than anyone else. That is my definition of fairness.

So if you drink Red Bull or other such energy drinks you should have to pay more for health care? After all some recent studies have shown that they can damage the heart.

Did I say it did? Nope.

Energy drinks damage your health, then you use up medical resources which could have gone to others therefore surely you should have to pay more than other people who don't damage their bodies with them or cigarettes? Same principle.

The primary thing is, second-hand smoke causes cancer. It's hurting people other than yourself when smoke.

I'm rather annoyed by this, considering I smoke. I know that it's bad for me, but I really don't care. Eventually, I'm going to have to quit because I can't afford it.

At least the tax money is supposedly going to a good cause

If the tax money was going towards a better health care system, that'd be okay.

I can't see any legit reason the prices are raising now. Seriously. There are many more 'bad' things that aren't getting higher taxed. Let's tax condoms a whole bunch so people don't buy them to use them. Since, you know, if you have a condom, you're more like to convince someone else to ahve sex, possibly making them pregnant, meaning they're hurting someone else.

You could pull that 'hurting someone else' crap with anything. Seriously. I'm sick of the tax ups. Really, all it's doing is making me not eat lunch so I can buy cigs?

From my personal experience and it's probably biased, the people who buy smokes are the people who usually can't afford them at the jobs I work at. It seems like we sell more smokes to people who use food stamps than people who buy healthy food. Some college students buy smokes, but nothing compared to the kids. People will still buy smokes no matter the price.

It's politically acceptable to tax cigarettes (cigarettes shall hereafter be referred to as fags). The US can always raise the taxes on petrol instead especially while demand is low

My mum smokes and we're already having a hard time making ends meet, and I know a price change isn't going to be enough to make her quit. I'd love to see how we afford this now.

That's kinda how I feel. My mom smokes as well and I know she won't quit. We aren't having too hard of a time making ends meet, but her eliminating cigarettes would help a lot.

However, I do want them to be taxed because I think people would stop buying them if they were. I know a bunch of people who have already quit because of the cost.

What if someone smokes in their basement alone? Should they be allowed to get a tax refund?

Yes, if you want a product or a service you should be expected to pay for it. Should I get a free house because I prefer being alone?

In theory no but since people are often incapable of looking to the future (look at the banking crises) the State has a responsibility to keep the workers for the it's economy healthy enough to work.

No, since it would be impossible to prove such a claim and the burden of proof lies with the plaintiff

I'm a bit confused how you got that I don't think they have any right to raise taxes? First off, it's my money, and if being in America we usually have a bit more of a say on these things.

I think we're so far down in the money slump they have to take money somewhere give or take i'm happy because it's not food again but I don't want my parents to get all crazy because their cigarettes are too expensive.

But what is a good reason and what is not a good reason? I don't know much about economics on a grand scale but I do know taxation is necessary to have and to maintain public services. Their power is derived from the majority of people in the area voting for them. In a country where dollars seems to matter more than policies in winning elections the rich win, only the electorate can change it by becoming informed citizens.
I can imagine you're not money bags too but you can't expect something for nothing

Not to mention cigarettes are not essential to life, better to raise it on cigarettes than on food or fuel

If someone is addicted price hikes are not likely to stop them.

About damn time.
I agree that for the addicts this most likely will not stop them.. However hopefully it will turn off new smokers and allow them to quit/not even bother trying it.

We recently found out in 07 that I'm "allergic" to cig smoke.. Not sure if allergic is the right word but it works..

I'm all for raising taxes on something to support good health.

Some people will switch to other brands that haven't been affected, some will just pay the extra money, and a few will quit. I know it's not the same but, seriously, people don't stop shooting up because of "price hikes."

And yes, I'm a smoker. This hasn't affected me yet.

Completely false analogy. The government taxing you is in no way analogous to a free market exchange like buying a house.

The banking crisis is due to government intervention, so again your analogy fails.

And I think you're being incredibly arrogant to simply assume that because people choose to make different decisions to you this means they are being short sighted and not taking into account everything they should.

But they aren't the plaintiff. What you are saying is that they should be punished (taxed) unless it can be proved they aren't doing anything wrong, basically saying they are guilty until proven innocent.

We really don't have that much say. We vote for the people, but after that they can basically do what they want till the next election. Plus I think it's a state tax and not that many people show up for those elections when there's no president ticket.
