First edition Harry Potter sells for over $19,000 - March 10th 2009, 12:39 AM

A Dallas auction house says a softcover copy of the first Harry Potter book sold for just over $19,000.The winning bidder was a vintage comic book collector from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. His wife is a fan of the Harry Potter series.
"Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone," was one of only 200 copies from the first printing issued with illustrated wrappers by London publisher Bloomsbury. The 1997 book includes an illustrated card signed by author J. K. Rowling.
The book was published in the U.S. as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."
The winning bid of $19,120 was nearly double the previous record for a softcover Harry Potter book, Heritage Auction Galleries said Friday.

They're going to sell it for more later... Good investment, as long as it stays clean

Well, i guess you can look at it like that. I still wouldn't buy anything Harry Potter related though. If/when they do sell it for more, then good on them i guess.

It's an excellent investment because it should gain in value.

I do think it is a good investment. I'd like to have one just so I could have one. Also to sell, that would be a plus.

It's not a waste of money. A lot of people might hate Harry Potter, but it's worth tons of money, and it'll only grow as time goes on.

That's a bit intense for a book. I hope mine are worth that much, some day. xD

I've never understood how people can spend thousands of dollars on things like that (other than resale value, but I can't understand why ANYONE needs an original copy so much that they're willing to spend 20k on it...) Some people just get too carried away with their hobbies!)

I wish I had one of those. Resale value will be high if they keep it in good condition.

Yeah... I don't get this kind of thing either... When people go over their heads to get original first copies or collect first print comic books which they never even take out of the pack... But it's their money.

I've gotta say... if I had infinite money, and could afford to buy LITERALLY anything and everything I wanted, then yeah, I might spend $19,000 for a first edition Harry Potter book. It's not something I would save up for, or spend all of my life savings on. It's kind of an obsessive thing... but seriously, if you have that much money to spare, and you're a fan of the series, why not? To me, it'd just be something that would be cool to have.

An irrational part of me wishes that if I were rich enough, I would have bought that. But only a smart part. The more intelligent side is slightly going "wtf?".

A bit extravagant for a paperback book, but it's going to be worth a ton in resale value, and heck, what Harry Potter fan wouldn't love to have it?

I like Harry Potter. I wouldn't say I'm like.. a huge fan but I've read some of the books and seen some of the movies. I'd like one, just so I could have it. It's a really good investment.
