Battery Breakthrough Could Recharge Phones in Seconds - March 13th 2009, 08:53 PM

http://www.newser.com/story/53206/ba...n-seconds.html

I think this would be potentially awesome. My phone is always dying in horrible places and it takes forever to charge. This would make things a lot easier.

That is cool. It has the potential to speed lots of stuff up. I don't see why someone would need to cut down their cell phone recharge time to just a few seconds. But, this can be applied lots of other places as well with lots of benefits.

That would be SO useful. My phone is 2 years old and dies at the most inconvienent times.

If it can transfer such a large amount of energy in a short time (ie a lot of kW) without exceeding the current on the device or using superconductivity it must require a lot of energy (first law of thermodynamics says matter cannot be created or destroyed)

As batteries are rated in mAh so when it comes to recharging it means only that much can be "pushed through" hence why it currently takes hours. I'd imagine the new batteries can increase this figure.

Also P = VI so for a generic 1.5V battery we get a power consumption of 1.5*0.65 = 0.975 Wh = 2.708*10^-4 J. Bearing in mind a battery cannot release more power than it has and because no device is 100% efficient this means more has to be fed in. Increasing the rate of mAh should work for recharging but it follows it can only discharge at roughly the same rate so for larger values discharge time will be increased

My phone batter is amazing, but I used to have an awful one. This would have been awesome.
