Man who threw shoe at George Bush is jailed.. - March 17th 2009, 01:29 PM

Iraqi journalist Muntazer al Zaidi has been jailed for 3 years after throwing a shoe at George Bush.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090312/...s-3fd0ae9.html

I think it's quite ridiculous personally. I mean, would he have been jailed and punished like this had he thrown it anyone other than George Bush?

Although i agree he shouldn't just get away with it, but three years and being tortured? Seems a bit harsh.

He threw a shoe at him, and it didn't even hit him! I'd feel really hard done by if i were this guy.

I'd throw a shoe at Bush if I were in his position too...

Yeah, I think it's ridiculous. It was a shoe, not a bomb. But we're talking about the Middle East here, they aren't exactly known for being staunch about human rights...

Three years seems pretty darn over the top. I mean.. three years for throwing shoes?! Give him some darn probation already.

Re: Man who threw shoe at George Bush is jailed.. - March 17th 2009, 05:11 PM

I think it's completely ridiculous that he even threw the shoe to begin with. It was pointless and completely unnecessary. For goodness sakes, if George Bush threw a shoe at someone, everyone would be like, "Hang him!" Let's not pick favorites. Anytime former President Bush is mentioned in a situation, he's the one that everyone sees as being in the wrong. America can't even defend their president when someone throws a freaking shoe at him. That's nice to know.

Edit- And that's not to say that I think the guy should be severely punished. I just think that it should be made clear to him that he's not to throw shoes at people like a child.

I don't know. Three years is a tad over the top but I think the guy deserves it. I mean, like him or not, George Bush was the president of the US and therefore should get respect. Just 'cause you think he's an idiot, doesn't give you the right to throw shoes at a person.

I don't think an American journalist throwing shoes at the Iraqi president would get much less.

Three years is a lot but meh, maybe he'll learn not to act like a 5 year old.

Well, let's start of with this. Why the hell did the shoe even get that close to him? The secret service can be pardoned for the first one, but from what I remember, there was two? Really now?

And, about the jailing. You cannot say a few phrases about the president. Killing a cop gives you the death penalty in many states. Double standard? I was completely against Bush's policies and his administration, but if it was any other US President, I'm sure jailtime would be there.

I agree that throwing the shoe was totally immature as well as uncalled for. If you hate someone you don't throw a shoe at them, you just turn another cheek and go about your day.

But, at the same time, 3 years just for throwing a shoe? I think that is extremely over the top especially since it didn't even hit him. 3 months sounds more right then 3 years does.

Keep in mind that this wasn't just a random act of immature violence... this is one of their traditions, a custom, and a very vulgar one at that. Throwing your shoe at someone in a Middle Eastern country is like flipping the bird to someone x 10. While I think the custom is strange, I do agree with the man's anger, Bush has done a lot of things wrong and I believe should be tried for crimes against humanity.

And 3 years for throwing a shoe.. that's ridiculous.

All the more reason for the man to be punished for it. Again, not severely punished, but enough to let him know that he was wrong.

I really don't think he should have been put in jail though. Am i the only one who actually finds it quite funny? It's not like he caused the president any harm, sure it's a huge sign of disrespect from him but i can't help but think a jail sentence is slightly harsh. Although, he'll probably be hailed as some mandella-esque character once he's released, seeing as George Bush is so popular with the iraqis :]

I do think that he shouldn't have thrown the shoe in the first place. I also think he should be punished, but three years? That's a lot of time for just throwing a shoe, I'm afraid.

Way too much time in jail for a crime that was far more symbolic than violent.

It is extreme that he is being tortured for it. I'd understand if it were, what, maybe a day or two in jail with no torturing involved.

But this reminds me of a letter someone in my town wrote in the newspaper. He mentioned this situation and then he commented "Would he have recieved the same punishment if he were to have done this to Obama?" and I couldn't help but be curious myself. Cause truthfully, I'm not sure if the situation would be handled the same at all merely cause Bush isn't exactly the most favorite people to many; and just to get it out there, I did support Bush, but that doesn't mean I agreed 100% with all of his decisions. But honestly, I'm pretty questioning about why I hear some people around me rant about "that shoe should have hit him!" and "that guy should be hailed as a hero!" I mean really, is that necessary?

Exactly. If the shoe would've been thrown at President Obama, people would see it in a whole different way.

Should it have happened? No. It's rude, disrespectful and pointless. Should he be punished? Yes! But not by going to jail. What ever happened to the punishment fitting the crime. =/

I can understand throwing a shoe at the president would get you some jail time. Regardless of how it may be seen elsewhere, to the president, it was an attempted assault. However, it didn't hit the president so I'd say jail him, probably just 1 year or less. It didn't hit the president, and even if it did hit him square in the face, it wouldn't have killed him. Although, this reminds me of my highschool math teacher who sometimes threw a shoe at you if you really pissed him off or if you were a dick, although he never whipped it very hard.

Use common sense next time. It may be a custom, but throwing an object at a leader of a country is going to get you into some serious trouble whether it be a bomb or a shoe.

Jeez! He isn't higher than anyone else and he isn't a leader anymore so I don't understand why he should get punished when if he threw it at someone in the street he wouldn't get anywhere near that kind of harsh punishment.

Crimes against humanity? Are you serious. I COMPLETELY disagree with you. It's not like he's the only person who went through with this. Does that mean that everyone in Congress who voted for the war should be too? Sure, it was a bit unnecessary (a bit, yes, not a lot), but it's definitely not to the point of Crimes Against Humanity.

Because you don't live in Iraq. You guys have to realize how serious this is. In Islam, the bottom of your shoe is considered the dirtiest part of your body. Throwing a shoe is one of the worst things yo can do without actually severely hurting him.

I have lived in a muslim country, and i do realise that.
I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished at all, but three years is definitely too harsh, in my opinion.
