Australian Cabinet Minister - Health expenditure files missing; escorts paid for on Government credit card - August 27th 2011, 12:00 AM

What in the world is wrong with this guy? IS HE STUPID OR SOMETHING? Oh, wait, he's part of the mob running the country - yes, he's stupid.

Thoughts?

Better yet, I have a question: if a politician, or anyone elected thereof, commits an ethical crime as ridiculous as this, what would be the ETHICAL thing to do in his position?

It is also important to remember that the Government in power has a minority Government of 1. If he resigns, I believe it goes to re-election - something which the current Prime Minister is NOT willing to have happen, but the Opposition is calling for it.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Thankfully Thompson is just an MP and not a minister. I hate it when they do shit like this. I mean I couldn't give a toss if he just hired some escorts, and I don't think the rest of Australia would either. We're the country that when we found out the then opposition leader K Rudd went to a strip club, his approval rating went up. But using a government credit card to buy hookers? God damn man, that's unethical AND stupid. If he actually did it he must have been pretty confident in his ability to get away with it. I hope he didn't, because I don't want Abbott's grubby hands all over the country, not that I'm a big fan of Gillard.

The opposition isn't exactly calling for it. They're being very careful with what they say, because the only MP in parliament that is being charged with a crime is Mary Jo Fisher, a liberal MP, with shoplifting and assault. So if Abbot says we need to toss Thompson out, he has to explain why he hasn't tossed Fisher out, then we'd be back to basics because it'd all be even again. They're stepping around it though, and saying stuff like "Gillard needs to give a full explanation on what happened blah blah" etc etc.

If he did it (and he hasn't even been charged), he should probably step down, if we're talking about ethics, and he probably would have already if not for the precarious postion we're in. I hope he doesn't step down.

Thoughts: "Idiot", "muppet", "tool" and so on.

What should he do: Pay the money back and stand down. Anyone that careless or bone-headed as to when and when not to use government money should not be in a position where they can dictate the wider use of such money. What he does in his private life with his own money is his own business, so long as it doesn't contravene any laws; but how he uses public money is another matter, as is when MPs break the law (as per Fisher). Ultimately, those in positions of power should be held to a suitably high standard of responsibility.

He should step down. Though he remains fairly adamant that he didn't do it, perhaps that's part of the reason he hasn't stepped down? He'll have trouble bouncing back from this in the next election anyway, even if he is proven innocent.

Honestly, the LNP should take this opportunity to elect a new leader, in case it does go to a re-election. From the results of last election, it seems like Australia would be happy to have a Liberal government if it weren't for Tony Abbott.

Australia hates the both of them. I'm rooting for K Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull as PM and Opposition leader. I know both of those things happening are as unlikely as each other but I can dream.

Hey, if we're being unrealistic then Wilkie for PM. Why not huh? And lets get rid of both the LNP and ALP.

I have spoken.

Yeah Kevin Rudd was actually pretty good. I only ever vote for the greens though :P Sure, they may not be the best option as far as the economy's concerned but at least they've got their heads screwed on and never seem to get caught up in all this stupid drama. I've disliked Julia Gillard ever since she said something once about taking action on something (climate change I think) 'only when the community demands it'. That makes me so angry. She's the one in the position of power, she's the once who can make these changes. But she does nothing sjfhaljflk. Ok, sorry, I'm done!

Uh. You vote for the Greens. The Greens get into Power. Minority government then gets influenced VERY heavily by the Greens. Greens want the Carbon Tax. Minority Government gives them Carbon Tax.

Otherwise, yes, I agree. Julia Gillard should gtfo.

Totally agree. K Rudd wasn't as half bad as everyone made him out to be - Julia is much more of an idiot than him; Abbott still seems the lessor of two evils, in my eyes.

John Howard, anyone? (:

Sounds good to me.

I'd have Bob Katter as PM with Wilson Tucky as Deputy before before I'd have Howard back in power.
