What Would You Do If You Thought You Saw a Child Bride? - March 17th 2009, 05:58 PM

The FLDS, which has been renounced by the Mormon Church for it's practice of polygamy , has been accused of arranging marriages between underage girls and much older men who already have multiple wives. Young women have spoken out about allegedly being forced into marriage when they were as young as 14, and wishing they'd had help escaping their fates. So how would people react if they thought they were seeing a young girl being forced into a polygamous marriage against her will?

Probably call social work, or something.
I couldn't just walk away and do nothing.... well I could walk away to phone social services

I'd definitely call the police or social work. No way is forcing a child into marriage okay.

I'd throw a few insults here and there before calling the police.

Re: What Would You Do If You Thought You Saw a Child Bride? - March 17th 2009, 09:14 PM

To be honest, I don't know what I would do if I saw a child bride. I know things like this happen, but there are cases of people who actually want this. For instance, I could have been married off at 13 in my state if I wanted to and if my parents would have agreed to sign the papers. However, that raises the question of whether or not children are young enough to judge for themselves if they are ready to get married. For the most part, I think that the law should be 16 with parental consent except in special cases (like when there is a child involved, for example).

I've searched all over and can not find anything to cite this, but one of the things that I loved watching was a couple on "The Secret Lives of Women". She was a child bride and was sixteen with two children already. I can't recall how old she was when she was married, but she was happy about her marriage. Her husband, however, was older than her. They married across the state lines where it was legal. Word got out throughout the town and he was reported the police, where he was later convicted of some sexual crime and spent time in jail because of his wife's age. He was in his early twenties and she was 16 at the time of the filming.

If I saw a child bride and abuse and neglect were obvious, then I would do something about it.

To be honest i'd probably do nothing. I don't think it's my business to get involved with other people and wouldn't feel it was my place to comment. Obviously, if i saw someone in sudden danger or something similar then i'd probably contact the police but without knowing the full story it's hard to know what i'd do.

I'd ignore it, maybe say the kid is too young to be a wife but that would be the extent of it. It has no effect on me, no purpose to me, so why should I bother to do something?

If she looked like a child (like, 15 or under - although 15 and up might be allowed with parental concent I'm not sure), then I'd call social services. If I didn't know she was a child - I'd probably do nothing. (How would I know if not by the person's appearance? ) Whether or not it happens wouldn't be up to me, that'd be on the potential "bride", her parents and social services. All I could do is report it. But, I think marriage laws should be 18 and up.
