Man freed after being wrongly imprisoned for 27 years - March 18th 2009, 01:33 PM

A British man, Sean Hodgson has been freed after spending 27 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

He is one of the longest-serving victims of a miscarriage of justice in the UK.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/h...re/7950303.stm

He confessed to killing this young woman, but apparently was mentally ill when he confessed. They're saying that DNA evidence proves that he could not have killed her.

At the trial his defense said that he was a pathalogical liar and that all his confessions were untrue. But yeah, he was still convicted.

I can't even imagine being imprisoned for 27 years for something i didn't do, however he did admit to it, so that throws a bit of a spanner in the works.

He probably confessed because of police interrigation tactics.!

Yeah, I can't help but wonder if something or someone made him confess. 27 years is a very long time, though.

Wow, imagine what your life would be like 27 years of it spent in a jail cell. You'd loose touch with the current world a bit. I'm glad they finally let him go, and discovered he was innocent.
Did they find the real killer though?

No, they haven't. The investigation is ongoing. I doubt they'll find the real killer now though.

27 years they had... you'd think in that time scale they could do anything. Evidently my idea of the police if far from reality.
I hope they do, this guy should have some sort of closure, ohh he killed her... etc etc

I agree, the government cannot just let him walk away, his freedom the only thing he gets.
Yeah its amazing that he is free, but they spent 27 years working out he didn't do something... even a bunch of flowers "sorry we wrongly imprisoned you".

Something similar happened to someone here, about 20 years I think it was.

Why was it on-going if they had the "convict" + put him in prison for 27 years?

I'm so glad he was found to be not guilty and released! I can't imagine getting stuck in jail for almost 30 years for a crime I didn't commit. I can just imagine how ecstatic he is!

That would be horrible. I can't imagine being in jail, never mind being in jail for something that I didn't do.

Damn right. I would sue the hell out of the government for lost wages and lost fun. Then I'd take those millions, get myself a college degree or two, travel the world, etc.

I haven't read the article but i was talking to my mam about it earlier and i think it's terrible.. He better be getting something for what the governments stupidity did to him. I know I'd sure want something to make up for it if it was me.

No criminal justice system is perfect. If you think it can be and you think this is unjust and things need to get better, get into reality.

That's an asbolutely ridiculous statement. Of course this is injust, and of course things need to get better, because people shouldn't be imprisoned for years and years for crimes they have not committed.

It's his own stupid fault he got convicted, he admitted to it and stopped an investigation which may very well have caught the real killer. I really hope he doesn't get compensation, which maybe wont as at the time the conviction was fairly reasonable.

He may have suffered injustice, though of his own making, but he stopped the victim, the victim's family and the person who committed the crime from recieving justice which is far worse. Especially since there is quite a high reoffence rate from people who commit those sorts of crimes, who know who else could have been hurt from this guys actions?

Hmm, after reading this, thinking, then feeling a bit stupid, I must agree.
