Toddlers and Tiaras. Your opinion? -
September 13th 2011, 08:19 PM
What's your opinion on beauty pageants for young children?
http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/vid...2011/17us04xok This is the kinda thing I'm talking about. Personally, I can see both sides of the arguement. On the one hand, it helps improve their confidence, and makes them feel 'pretty.' On the other hand, it's making them think that looks are all that's important, and quite simply destroying their childhood by putting them under an immense pressure to be perfect. For me, the second hand is bigger. LiveHelpOperator|TalentCommittee RIP Grandad xxx |

I don't agree with it. Sure, it gives them confidence, but not the sort of confidence. They become catty at a young age, think they are better than everyone else, and all sorts of other things that might make it difficult for them to make friends with anyone later in life. Pageants are all they are used too, and it's not good to keep them going through that, especially against their will. Could you imagine going through this as a child, and not being able to experience a regular childhood? This isn't a regular childhood, and I believe it's the parents to blame. Of course, you want your kids to have dreams but most stage moms had THIS dream and couldn't fulfill it, so they are making their kids go through it.

I do not agree with young children being in pageants such as on the show Toddlers and Tiaras. I think it's completely wrong. The girls get way too wrapped up in themselves and who knows how they're going to act when they're older. They already think they're so much better than everyone else.. How is that a good lesson toward them and how is that a boost of self-esteem/confidence? They think they're pretty BECAUSE of makeup, hair, and pretty little dresses. They have no insight as to what inner beauty is and what beauty is without makeup and all that junk. I just think it teaches kids the wrong life lessons and it should be stopped. Kids should be able to have a childhood. Sports, Barbie dolls, video games, TV, spending time with friends. Not being in competitions all the time just to win. Have you seen how they act when they don't win? It's not pretty. I personally would've resented my parents for putting me in pageants and ripping me of a childhood. I could ramble about this all day but I'll stop now.

Little girls dressing like prostitutes, and teaching them that beauty means having fake hair, fake tans, fake teeth, a face covered in makeup, a head of hair full of hairspray, and dressing in slutty little outfits and on the top of all that they are little brats.
Everyone is born right-handed. Only the greatest overcome it. |

I think it's disgusting. It teaches young girls that they have to put loads of makeup on and wear fancy outfits to be beautiful. Having a little girl compete to receive money based on her looks is appalling. Furthermore, I think that children who go through these competitions have no real childhood because pressure is placed on them to win at the pageants. Sure, the child might feel extremely confident if she wins, but growing up with the pressure to always be "perfect" most likely causes extreme problems later in life.

I have seen the show a few times, and it disturbs me, because the girls shouldn't have to dress up in skimpy outfits and lots of makeup to feel pretty and beautiful. I think it sends out the wrong message. These pageants have been around way before this show even started. But it does help draw in the pedophiles, specially when they dress with padded bras and the prostitute outfit.

It's messed up. Kids should act their age.
"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it." |

Regarding the outfits and makeup - I agree with everyone else. Gross, wrong, etc.
Although, I do think pageants (no makeup and cute dress-type) pageants are fine, as long as the kid wants to do it and the parents are doing it as fun. But yes, Toddlers and Tiaras is disgusting. So you have gray hair and you're only 26

I do not agree with "glitz" pageants. I will admit I'm guilty of watching Toddlers & Tiaras, a lot. I only agree with the pageants if the child is old enough to want to do it. I've seen SO many episodes of that show where it was OBVIOUS the kids hating it and just wanted Mommy's approval.
"'Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it.' I shook my head. 'You don't know--' I began. But, as usual, she didn't let me finish. 'Yes,' she said simply, 'I do know. I've watched you, Colie. You walk around like a dog waiting to be kicked. And when someone does, you pout and cry like you didn't deserve it.' 'No one deserves to be kicked,' I said. 'I disagree,' she said flatly. 'You do if you don't think you're worth any better...'" |

I'd like to point out that it seems most people in this thread are referring to Glitz Pageants. There ARE pageants that are for natural looks only, if your child has fake anything they get disqualified. Those, if the child wants to do it, I see no issues with.

Personally, I'm against all form of pageants... I just think they do nothing good for society... But what kind of mother does that to a young girl? That kind of pressure being put on a young child isn't good for them.

It's the Holy Grail for pedophiles and hebephiles (depending how old the girls are) because it's young girls wearing skimpy outfits, posing for cameras, and the girls are more or less willing to dress like that. I think the girls look like plastic dolls, not like humans, which I find quite horrible as it teaches these girls as long as you shake your ass while wearing a skimpy dress at age 10 (or however old they are), you'll get what you want. I'd also imagine the parents are the ones who drive these girls to go to such extremes and pamper them so they become spoiled brats.
To me, beauty pagents are meant to show people's natural beauty. It's not natural to have 10 bottles of make-up smothered all over their face with fake teeth, fake hair, fake damn near everything. It not only questions the girls, their parents and the audience but also the judges as they have to visually inspect the girls and rate them on a scale. To me, the only winners of these pagents are parents who don't put their children through this, they get my congrats. Those parents who do put their children through this shouldn't be surprised if and when they child gets sexually violated. I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

i think its awful. first of all - you are basically paying a ton of money and making your child into an object to win money and prizes. seconds, you are going to possibly ruin her self esteem forever because she will have to try and be what these freaks think is pretty for you and them. third, in what world is this anything but a pedophiles dream show? i mean really? i watched it once, and i was disgusted.

It's complete and utter bullshit. I saw A ONE YEAR OLD competing in the pageant. And a commercial I saw for an episode was a mother telling her 3 year old(?) to do this and do that and yelling an screaming at her "You HAVE to step it up" and yelling at her while she's crying her eyes out "You are going to walk in the restaurant and get yourself a Mountain Dew!"
It's ridiculous that the mothers, fathers, aunts, grandparents etc, put their little children in that situation. And there was this 2 or 3 year old dressed as Julia Robert's prostitute in Pretty Woman. A PROSTITUTE. You have to be kidding me. That is FAR too mature for that toddler. Our society is getting mind-blowing STUPID. And think about what those kids will look like in their teens after YEARS of wearing heavy makeup, hairspray, etc. It's not benefiting them any more then it is to live in a box under a bridge. I personally think the show should be cancelled because of what it's promoting. Dubstep. Wub Wub.

It's one thing for an average female toddler to dress up in a pretty dress to play "princess". This is far from that, however, due to its similarity, I would guess that's one reason why some people may support it: the girls just seem passionate about playing princess dress-up. Pageants are not all bad. I am not fond of glitz pageants but natural pageants where the kids actually look like little kids, are perfectly fine and acceptable.

I'm definitely against the glitz pagents with the fake stuff and the make up, and I'm against all pagents to an extent becuase I think it encourages the wrong values and empahsizes the wrong things (physical appearance and beauty are most important) and if you aren't pretty enough (according to random judges) then you lose. As opposed to who someone is on the inside It could set kids up for negative things later on.
That being said, if I had a daughter and she wanted to do a natural pagent, I'd probably at least consider it. |

I can't stand this show and I can't stand beauty pagents.
My choir puts on a pagent every year and I have worked it for four years. Sure the people that win feel good, but the people that don't it's awful. I see countless little girls every year bawling their eyes out and saying their ugly. I've hugged girls of all ages as they cried on my shoulder. I can't believe their parent's put them through this so they can be deemed as what society says is beautiful. ![]() |
