Would you do it? -
September 20th 2011, 06:05 PM
Today I was walking back to my apartment. On my way back, it started to rain. I got to the major crosswalk right as it changed to don't walk, and this isn't a crosswalk you would just go anyways (multiple people have gotten hit). At this point, it starts raining pretty hard and I'm wearing a white shirt. A random guy came over, stood next to me, and put his umbrella over my head. He then walked me most of the way to my building.
So my question is this: is this something you would do? Guys, would you do this for a girl? Girls, would you do it for a guy? Explain why you would or wouldn't. This can go for anything, holding doors, or just doing nice things like this in general. "'Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it.' I shook my head. 'You don't know--' I began. But, as usual, she didn't let me finish. 'Yes,' she said simply, 'I do know. I've watched you, Colie. You walk around like a dog waiting to be kicked. And when someone does, you pout and cry like you didn't deserve it.' 'No one deserves to be kicked,' I said. 'I disagree,' she said flatly. 'You do if you don't think you're worth any better...'" |

I wouldn't have done something like that. If women talk about having a desire to "dance in the rain," then perhaps you need to learn how to handle getting wet before dancing in it. I'll open doors for women, but won't go any further than that unless she's my girlfriend (and I'd do anything for her, not because she's a woman necessarily, but because she means a lot to me).

I would do it. If I had an umbrella, I'd hold it over someone who didn't. (Although I can't see that happening here in Arizona
) I have given half my meal to homeless people, assisted disabled shoppers (wheelchairs, etc.) and held doors open for people. I like helping people.

I don't mind holding doors for people, but I don't carry an umbrella and if I did I don't think I would hold it over someone and then follow them home. And if someone did that for me I'd be creeped out unless I knew the person.

I would, no matter who it was. I wouldn't necessarily follow them home, but I would hold the umbrella over their head for a while until they could find sort of shelter. But, I hold open doors, pull out someone's chair, help the elderly reach high places if they can't, and other sort of helpful things.

I don't see why not. I like to help people, and if they need it and it's not a huge inconvenience to me I don't see why not. Might brighten up their day
I thought about you for the rest of the day. Catching my head turning to find you again. I hated myself for it. |

I'll hold doors open for women and grab an item off the top shelf for women I don't know but that's as far as it goes. I wouldn't walk a woman in a wet white t-shirt to her building in the rain holding an umbrella because my motives would be along the lines of meeting new women, going on a date with them and possibly eventually having sex, or some other purpose. Following them home evokes a situation that to me, isn't just being kind without expecting something in return.
I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

I'd do it! One time when I was in 4th grade, there were these small kindergartners who rode my bus and we were all waiting outside for our bus and then it started raining and then hailing pretty bad so I kinda bunched them all close together with me so they didn't get hurt

Let me clear something up, he didn't walk with me the entire way...he happened to be heading toward a building NEAR my apartment.
And when someone does, you pout and cry like you didn't deserve it.' Yes, I would do it, regardless of gender.

I think I'd feel uncomfortable if I did that or if someone did it for me. Probably cause I'm anxious 90% of the time and I'm scared of strangers.
However, I do hold doors open for people whenever I get the chance to.

If it were on my way, regardless of gender I would help the person in need. If the person obviously lived a couple blocks away, I couldn't be bothered.
I do open doors for people, give people their wallets back once they drop them, give my seat to someone older on the bus, and pick things up when old people (Who seem incapable of bending over to grab the item) drop them. It's not something I even think about, and I don't see why it should be. - Justin ![]() |

I feel like while on paper (or text ._. ) this sounds like a great idea, I find it hard to believe that 50% of the people where I live anyway wouldn't be freaked out by this kind of gesture. Hell, I'd bet 30% of girls would immediately turn around, slap the guy, and possible file for harassment. It's the sad, sad world we live in.
As for whether or not I'd do this, perhaps. But I don't know if I'd go all the way back to their apartment

I'm surprised by how many people would be freaked out by this, honestly. I guess that's just because people on my college campus do stuff like this ALL THE TIME, so it's not creepy/surprising to me at all.
"'Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it.' I shook my head. 'You don't know--' I began. But, as usual, she didn't let me finish. College campus is a lot different than walking around town or the city. Hugely.

I'm incredibly tiny so holding umbrellas over people is somewhat difficult for me ... I would if it were easier though. But if I see someone I know lives near me at uni and it's raining I offer to walk back and share my umbrella.
As for holding doors etc. I always do unless I'm in a huge rush. And let other people on / off buses etc first

I would definitely do that. Most people don't like to be rained on, especially when wearing white.

I'd be freaked out if someone i didn't know did that. I'd share an umbrella with friends, but not a stranger.
